Automated Vehicle to Vehicle Conflict Analysis at Signalized Intersections by Camera and LiDAR Sensor Fusion

Alabi Mehzabin Anisha et al.

Summary: This research presents a robust approach for automated safety diagnosis using sensor fusion techniques. By fusing the outputs of a roadside low-resolution camera and a solid-state LiDAR, and processing the data through multiple steps, the proposed method achieves high precision and recall in detecting and classifying different types of vehicle conflicts at signalized intersections.

How many are enough?: Investigating the effectiveness of multiple conflict indicators for crash frequency-by-severity estimation by automated traffic conflict analysis

Ashutosh Arun et al.

Summary: Traffic conflict techniques provide a viable alternative for assessing safety in emerging technologies with limited crash data. This study explores the benefits of using multiple conflict indicators and finds that careful selection of compatible indicators, rather than increasing their number, enhances the predictive performance of conflict-based models.

Development of conflict severity index for safety evaluation of severe crash types at unsignalized intersections under mixed traffic

Madhumita Paul et al.

Summary: This study proposes a conflict severity index (CSI) based on crash risk and expected collision severity for severe crash types at unsignalized intersections on intercity highways. The sensitivity analysis shows that CSI increases with increasing speed of right-of-way vehicle/follower, vehicular mass difference and conflict angle. Relationships between CSI values of critical crossing/rear-end conflicts and related severe crash types demonstrate that the proposed index is an appropriate measure to reflect probable collision severity.

Spatiotemporal Variation of Rear-End Conflicts at Signalized Intersections under Disordered Traffic Conditions

Ritvik Chauhan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spatial and temporal variations of rear-end conflicts at signalized intersections under mixed traffic conditions with poor lane discipline. It proposes a simple and robust method to identify leader and follower vehicle pairs for detecting rear-end conflicts, and finds that a significantly higher number of conflicts occur downstream of intersections. The research also shows that different vehicle classes with varying lateral movements can affect vehicle following time and contribute to a high probability of rear-end conflicts.

Using bus critical driving events as surrogate safety measures for pedestrian and bicycle crashes based on GPS trajectory data

Pei Li et al.

Summary: This study utilized critical bus driving events extracted from GPS trajectory data as surrogate safety measures for pedestrian and bicycle crashes at bus stops. The analysis showed a positive correlation between these driving events and pedestrian and bicycle crashes. A Bayesian negative binomial model incorporating spatial correlation was built to estimate the impact of these events on the frequency of pedestrian and bicycle crashes, with results consistent with the correlation estimation.

Safety of bicyclists in roundabouts with mixed traffic: Video analyses of behavioural and surrogate safety indicators

G. Pulvirenti et al.

Summary: This study examines the behavior and safety of cyclists at roundabouts without bicycle facilities. Cyclists tend to ride faster on roundabouts with larger diameters and slower on roundabouts with smaller diameters, regardless of their interaction with other vehicles. Close interactions between cyclists and cars are common at both small and big roundabouts, with cyclists generally taking smaller lateral overtaking proximities and distance headways compared to cars.
