Towards achieving net zero emission targets and sustainable development goals, can long-term material footprint strategies be a useful tool?

Emrah Sofuoglu et al.

Summary: This study examines the importance of material footprint (MF) for EURO-26 countries in achieving net zero emission targets and sustainable development goals. The findings suggest that increasing the efficiency of MF is more effective than focusing on domestic material consumption for reducing emissions. The analysis reveals a long-term relationship between MF and CO2 emissions, with MF leading to an increase in emissions. However, the positive relationship between economic growth and CO2 emissions is not statistically significant. The individual results show that MF has a negative impact on emissions in developed countries, while it increases emissions in developing countries. Overall, it is recommended to implement long-term material footprint strategies and use MF policies as a strategic tool to achieve net zero emission targets and sustainable development goals.

Cost-optimal pathways towards net-zero chemicals and plastics based on a circular carbon economy

Christian Zibunas et al.

Summary: Without disruptive change, greenhouse gas emissions from fossil production of chemicals and plastics will double by 2050. Achieving net-zero emissions requires a coordinated strategy for the entire chemical industry, with a cost analysis and carbon-pricing incentives. We present cost-optimal investment pathways for global chemical and plastics production, showing that achieving net-zero will require increased capital expenditures. However, the total annual cost could be similar to fossil-based production, depending on the availability of renewable electricity and biomass. High recycling rates are also crucial for reducing resource demands and sensitivity to high resource prices.
