Uncertainty in Intermodal and Synchromodal Transport: Review and Future Research Directions

Thibault Delbart et al.

Summary: Long-haul continental freight transportation heavily relies on unimodal road transport, but intermodal transport has the potential for lower costs and greater sustainability. However, road transport has advantages in flexibility and adaptability. Improving the resilience of intermodal transport is crucial for a modal shift, with synchromodality offering real-time decision-making based on information. This review of literature on uncertainty in intermodal and synchromodal transport networks categorizes studies by planning level and focuses on proposed solutions.
