Development of a Progression-Based Signal-Timing Strategy for Continuous-Flow Intersections

Wenrui Qu et al.

Summary: A new signal-timing strategy based on traffic progression was developed for Continuous-Flow Intersections (CFIs), which was proven through traffic simulation-based experiments to outperform existing signal-timing optimization tools in reducing traffic delay, vehicle travel time, and queue length.

Evaluation and Analysis of CFI Schemes with Different Length of Displaced Left-Turn Lanes with Entropy Method

Binghong Pan et al.

Summary: This paper presents a methodological procedure for determination and evaluation of displaced left-turn lane length of Continuous Flow Intersection (CFI) based on the entropy method considering multiple performance measures for sustainable transportation. VISSIM and the surrogate safety assessment model (SSAM) were used to simulate the operational and safety performance of CFI, and a multi-attribute decision-making method based on an entropy method was adopted to determine the suitability of the CFI schemes under different traffic demand patterns. The results showed that CFI can significantly improve traffic efficiency and reduce delays and emissions compared to conventional intersections.
