From past to present: opportunities and trends in the molecular detection and diagnosis of Strongyloides stercoralis

Abigail Hui En Chan et al.

Summary: Strongyloides stercoralis is a soil-transmitted helminth that affects approximately 600 million people globally. The parasite can remain asymptomatic and unnoticed until the host's immune system is compromised, and severe cases can result in hyperinfection syndrome and larva dissemination. Current parasitological techniques have limitations in sensitivity, but immunological and molecular techniques, including next-generation sequencing, offer higher sensitivities and specificities for detection. As S. stercoralis is now a target for control by the World Health Organization, it is important to review and discuss the advancements in molecular techniques for accurate detection and diagnosis. Improved detection methods can greatly impact the management and control of this neglected tropical disease.
