Prevalence and risk factors of Avian Influenza Viruses among household ducks in Chattogram, Bangladesh

Md Ashiqur Rahman et al.

Summary: This study identifies epidemiological factors associated with Avian Influenza Virus (AIV) infection among household ducks in Chattogram, Bangladesh. The results show high sero-prevalence of AIV and highlights the importance of proper farm management practices and vaccination coverage in reducing AIV transmission.

A new clade 2.3.4.4b H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza genotype detected in Europe in 2021

Alexander Nagy et al.

Summary: A new highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 genotype was detected in geese and ducks from a backyard farm in the Czech Republic. The Czech H5N1 virus retained the A/Eurasian_Wigeon/Netherlands/1/2020-like backbone but had an altered PB2 segment obtained from co-circulating low-pathogenic avian influenza viruses.

Spatiotemporal analysis of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) outbreaks in poultry in Egypt (2006 to 2017)

Yumna Elsobky et al.

Summary: This study explored the spatiotemporal pattern and identified clusters of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) subtype H5N1 outbreaks in Egypt from 2006 to 2017. It found that outbreaks mainly occurred in winter, with the highest outbreak density recorded in the Nile Delta. The study also highlighted the role of unrestricted movements of poultry and low vaccination and surveillance coverage in the wider spread of infection all over Egypt. These findings can contribute to the development of effective disease control strategies.

Summary: The study revealed the genomic epidemiology of AIV in backyard poultry in Bangladesh, with H5 and H9 subtypes circulating among the poultry. Despite the circulation of the 2.3.2.1a (new) clade among chicken and duck populations without causing outbreaks, it may be attributed to vaccination.

Assessment of poultry rearing practices and risk factors of H5N1 and H9N2 virus circulating among backyard chickens and ducks in rural communities

Ariful Islam et al.

Summary: This study examines the risk factors associated with avian influenza infection in backyard poultry in rural communities in Bangladesh. The results indicate that a certain percentage of backyard poultry tested positive for avian influenza, and factors such as poultry rearing practices, scavenging areas, cage locations, cleaning frequency, and waste disposal methods are associated with the occurrence of avian influenza. The study also reveals that household members have direct contact with poultry, especially when handling sick birds. The authors recommend improving biosecurity practices and raising public awareness in household-level poultry farms in rural communities in Bangladesh.

Emergence of a Reassortant 2.3.4.4b Highly Pathogenic H5N1 Avian Influenza Virus Containing H9N2 PA Gene in Burkina Faso, West Africa, in 2021

Lalidia Bruno Ouoba et al.

Summary: HPAI H5N1 viruses were detected in three regions of Burkina Faso, which are closely related to viruses identified in Nigeria and Niger. These reassortant viruses possess mutations that may increase their zoonotic potential. The emergence of H5N1/H9N2 reassortant viruses in West Africa raises concerns about their impact on animal and human health, and highlights the risk of new genotypes of HPAI viruses emerging in the region.

Ariful Islam et al.

Summary: By investigating the prevalence and risk factors of AIV subtypes in pigeons and quails at live bird markets in Bangladesh, it was found that the overall prevalence of AIV was 25.56%, with quails having a significantly higher prevalence than pigeons. The behavior and hygiene practices of vendors were identified as the main influencing factors.

Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza Subtype H5N8 in Poultry Farms, South Korea

Woo-Hyun Kim et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the spatiotemporal distribution of HPAI H5N8 outbreaks in poultry farms in South Korea from January 2014 to June 2015, revealing that the epidemic was mainly characterized by short-term transmission and supported strict control strategies. It was found that the introduction of the epidemic in South Korea started from the southwestern region and spread to the middle region.

Molecular epidemiology and pathogenicity of H5N1 and H9N2 avian influenza viruses in clinically affected chickens on farms in Bangladesh

Ripatun Nahar Ripa et al.

Summary: In poultry farms in the Chattogram Division of Bangladesh, co-circulation of AIV subtypes H5N1 and H9N2 is common, indicating high levels of virus circulation and potential modulation of disease severity. Genetic analyses of a small subset of viruses sampled in the region show they are closely related to viruses isolated in Bangladesh, but the exact origin of these viruses remains uncertain due to lack of longitudinal surveillance in the area. Additionally, amino acids at putative antigenic residues underwent a distinct replacement in 2012, coinciding with the use of H5N1 vaccines.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the prevalence of H9N2 avian influenza virus in commercial and backyard chickens in Egypt. Results showed widespread infection throughout the country, with higher infection rates in commercial farms compared to backyard chickens. Continuous surveillance and control programs are necessary to address the issue.
