Microstructures and mechanical properties of Ti-Al-V-Nb alloys with cluster formula manufactured by laser additive manufacturing

Tian-yu Liu et al.

Summary: Ti-Al-V-Nb alloys were designed to study their formability, microstructure, and mechanical properties. The addition of Nb in the alloys slightly increased the surface roughness and decreased the molten pool height, improving spreadability. The Ti-5.96Al-1.94V-3.54Nb alloy exhibited the best performance in terms of geometrical accuracy and hardness due to the optimal matching relationship between the alpha-phase size and its content.

Defects, densification mechanism and mechanical properties of 300M steel deposited by high power selective laser melting

Guanyi Jing et al.

Summary: The use of high laser power in selective laser melting technology can improve productivity and eliminate surface defects, resulting in high-density 3D printed parts. The combined use of high laser power and low scanning speed with a soft scraper can achieve a relative density of over 99.9% for 300M steel parts. Additionally, the as-printed parts exhibit a heterogeneous microstructure with alternating stacks of low-temperature tempered martensite and high-temperature tempered martensite.

Three-dimensional characterization of powder particles using X-ray computed tomography

Xin Zhou et al.

Summary: A method for particle morphology characterization using X-ray computed tomography (XCT) was explored in this study. Results showed that 3D XCT measurements closely matched SEM results and cluster analysis provided a comprehensive evaluation method for metal powders. The study demonstrated that 3D morphology measurement provides a better understanding of powder particles compared to 2D methods.

Numerical simulation of powder effect on solidification in directed energy deposition additive manufacturing

Xin-xin Yao et al.

Summary: The integrated simulation of powder effects on particle temperature and microstructural evolution in laser directed energy deposition additive manufacturing process was carried out. The study found that a narrow particle size distribution leads to a more uniform temperature distribution on the deposited layers and smaller equiaxed grains near the side surfaces of the sample. Additionally, appropriate powder particle size is beneficial for converting electromagnetic energy into heat and forming equiaxed grains to improve product quality.

Build location effect on the single-track pore characteristics formed with the laser powder bed fusion process

Subin Shrestha et al.

Summary: The study shows that the build location significantly affects porosity in laser powder bed fusion, with the horizontal location being more important than the build height. Single tracks formed at a corner away from the build chamber window and towards the dispenser have the highest pore number and volume.
