Influence of cooling rate on ω phase precipitation and deformation mechanism of a novel metastable β titanium alloy

Kaige Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of cooling rate on the mechanical properties of a beta titanium alloy, revealing that air-cooled alloy had larger omega phase size, higher tensile strength, but lower ductility compared to water-quenched alloy. The deformation mechanisms of the alloy also varied with cooling rate, showing a transition from stress-induced omega phase transformation to only dislocation slip.

The effect of precursory α and ωphase on microstructure evolution and tensile properties of metastable β titanium alloy

Ruixue Zhang et al.

Summary: The microstructure evolution and tensile properties in a metastable beta titanium alloy, Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-3Cr-0.6Fe alloy, with different aging conditions were investigated. The results showed that the nanoscale omega phase formed during low-temperature aging had no effect on the tensile properties. Additionally, the small size omega phase failed to assist secondary alpha(s) nucleation and refine alpha(s) during high-temperature aging due to omega dissolution. On the other hand, the alpha phase precipitated during low-temperature aging played a considerable role in refining lamellar alpha(s) and increasing tensile strength.

Effects of Deformation and Phase Transformation Microstructures on Springback Behavior and Biocompatibility in β-Type Ti-15Mo Alloy

Sujie Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that the springback ratio of the alloy is affected by microstructures such as deformation twins, dislocations, and isothermal omega-phase, but it is possible to effectively control the springback behavior while maintaining biocompatibility of the alloy. Cell adhesion and proliferation on the alloy surface were observed to be good and not significantly affected by the microstructures mentioned above.

Summary: Oxygen partitioning to omega phase during aging improves compressive yield strength and work hardening behavior of titanium alloys containing oxygen-stabilized omega precipitates. Oxygen may offer design strategies to address embrittlement and loss of ductility in omega-strengthened beta Ti alloys.

Evolution of coordination between α and /3 phases for two-phase titanium alloy during hot working

Jian-wei Xu et al.

Summary: The study on a two-phase titanium alloy shows that the ability of coordinated deformation between alpha and /3 phases can influence the uniformity of microstructure evolution. When this ability is good, the BOR is maintained between alpha and /3 phases, while it deteriorates when the coordination is poor, leading to interface dislocation and deviation from the BOR.

A new insight into the α phase precipitation in β titanium alloy

Libo Zhou et al.

Summary: The alpha phase precipitation of beta -> beta' -> alpha in the Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy has been observed through transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), showing that the alpha phase nucleates at the beta' interface with a rotation angle with the beta matrix. The study discusses the four steps of alpha phase precipitation from the beta' phase and the crystallographic relationships between beta and beta', providing guidance for future microstructure tailoring of titanium alloys.

New insights into ω-embrittlement in high misfit metastable β-titanium alloys: Mechanically-driven ω-mediated amorphization

Wei Chen et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates omega-embrittlement of high misfit Ti-10Cr alloys and reveals that the lattice disordering of omega precipitates plays a key role in crack propagation. Mechanically-driven localized amorphization significantly affects the cleavage-like fracture behavior of Ti-10Cr alloys. The hydrostatic pressure, serving as the driving force for dislocations pile-up, is critical in this unusual fracture mechanism.

Static globularization and grain morphology evolution of α and β phases during annealing of hot-rolled TC21 titanium alloy

Ke Wang et al.

Summary: By annealing the TC21 titanium alloy at different temperatures, it was found that 880 degrees Celsius is the appropriate temperature to produce a homogeneous microstructure with globularized alpha and refined beta grains. At this temperature, the accelerated boundary splitting and termination migration promote the alpha phase globularization, leading to a more uniform distribution of grains.

Characterization of α2 Precipitates in Ti-6Al and Ti-8Al Binary Alloys: A Comparative Investigation

Sabry S. Youssef et al.

Summary: TEM and APT techniques were used to investigate nano-scale ordered alpha(2) precipitates in Ti-Al binary alloys. Strong short-range ordering of alpha(2) precipitates was observed in Ti-8Al alloy, while no superlattice reflections were found in Ti-6Al alloy. APT results showed distribution of alpha(2) clusters and atoms at the interface. The size and morphology of alpha(2) particles in Ti-8Al alloy obtained by TEM and APT were closely consistent.
