Chlorinated organophosphorus flame retardants-induced mitochondrial abnormalities and the correlation with progesterone production in mLTC-1 cells

Yixing Feng et al.

Summary: Environmental monitoring data showed that three chlorinated organophosphorus flame retardants have reproductive endocrine disrupting activities. The study found that TCEP could elevate progesterone production, while TDCPP and TCPP exhibited higher anti-androgenic activity and might inhibit progesterone production through mitochondrial damage and down-regulation of steroidogenic genes.

Organophosphate Esters in the Canadian Arctic Ocean

Roxana Suehring et al.

Summary: Eleven organophosphate esters (OPEs) were detected in surface water and sediment samples from yearly sampling in the Canadian Arctic. Chlorinated OPEs (Cl-OPEs) had higher concentrations in water samples compared to non-chlorinated OPEs, while concentrations in sediment samples were relatively similar. Samples from the Mackenzie River plume indicated riverine discharge as a source of OPEs in the Canadian Arctic.

Organophosphorus flame-retardant tris(1-chloro-2-propyl)phosphate is genotoxic and apoptotic inducer in human umbilical vein endothelial cells

Quaiser Saquib et al.

Summary: This study revealed that TCPP exhibits genotoxic and apoptotic effects on the human vascular system, potentially triggering similar responses. Further in vivo studies are warranted to explore the transcriptional and translational effects of TCPP.

Endocrine disrupting potential of replacement flame retardants-Review of current knowledge for nuclear receptors associated with reproductive outcomes

Lola Bajard et al.

Summary: This review identified gaps in data on the endocrine disrupting potential of many replacement flame retardants, calling for further evaluation and potential regulation of these chemicals. It also highlighted potential endocrine disrupting chemicals associated with reproductive outcomes among these emerging chemicals, raising concerns for mixture effects as the population is co-exposed to several flame retardants and other chemicals.

Organophosphorus flame retardants in breast milk from Beijing, China: Occurrence, nursing infant's exposure and risk assessment

Xuelei Chen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the occurrence of thirteen OPFRs in breast milk samples collected from Beijing mothers in 2018, revealing China as one of the most affected regions by OPFRs. Personal characteristics of mothers were found to impact the levels of certain OPFRs in breast milk, with most nursing infants' daily OPFR intake not raising significant health concerns. However, two OPFRs, TPhP and EHDPP, were noted to have higher estimated daily intakes than corresponding reference doses, potentially posing health risks.
