Pinostrobin alleviates testicular and spermatological damage induced by polystyrene microplastics in adult albino rats

Muhammad Umar Ijaz et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the mitigative effects of pinostrobin (PN) against testicular toxicities induced by polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) in rats. The results showed that PS-MPs intoxication caused oxidative stress, reduced hormone levels, and resulted in sperm abnormalities. PN treatment significantly alleviated these damages. Therefore, PN may serve as a potential therapeutic candidate to restore the testicular toxicities induced by PS-MPs.

Rhamnetin alleviates polystyrene microplastics-induced testicular damage by restoring biochemical, steroidogenic, hormonal, apoptotic, inflammatory, spermatogenic and histological profile in male albino rats

Ali Hamza et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the ameliorative effects of Rhamnetin (RHM) on testicular dysfunction caused by polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) in male albino rats. The results showed that PS-MPs exposure reduced antioxidant enzyme activities, increased oxidative stress levels, decreased sperm motility, and caused histopathological damage in testicular tissues. RHM supplementation was found to alleviate the detrimental effects of PS-MPs, attributed to its antioxidant, anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory, and androgenic properties.

Lithium intoxication induced pyroptosis via ROS/NF-κB/NLRP3 inflammasome regulatory networks in kidney of mice

Hongyuan Jing et al.

Summary: This study investigated the mechanism of renal inflammatory reaction induced by excessive intake of lithium. The results showed that high concentrations of lithium caused inflammatory damage and apoptosis in kidney tissue cells, as well as reduced antioxidant enzyme capacity and increased production of reactive oxygen species. Moreover, excessive lithium activated the NF-kappa B signaling pathway and NLRP3 inflammasome, resulting in the activation of inflammatory factors.

Polystyrene microplastics induced female reproductive toxicity in mice

Zhiqiang Liu et al.

Summary: This study revealed that PS-MPs exposure in female mice led to accumulation in various organs and tissues, increased inflammation in ovaries, and reduced the quality of oocytes by affecting biochemical markers and cellular processes. These findings provide important insights into the reproductive toxic effects of plastic microplastics on female mammals.

Comparing the effects of polystyrene microplastics exposure on reproduction and fertility in male and female mice

Zhaolan Wei et al.

Summary: Exposure to microplastics has negative effects on the reproductive systems and fertility of mice. Male mice experience reduced sperm quantity and increased sperm deformity, while female mice experience decreased ovary size and follicle number. Additionally, microplastic exposure alters hormone levels and leads to reduced pregnancy rates and fewer embryos in mice.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of microplastics on spermatogenesis in mice, showing a significant reduction in sperm count and an increase in deformity rate. Exposure to microplastics caused atrophy, shedding, and apoptosis of sperm cells in the testis, and disrupted the balance of Nrf2/HO-1/NF-κB pathway, leading to abnormal sperm quality in ICR mice.

Haibo Jin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the toxic effects of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) on male reproductive systems in mice. The results showed that PS-MPs accumulated in the testis, entered testicular cells, and led to decreased sperm quality and testosterone levels. Additionally, PS-MPs induced testicular inflammation and disruption of the blood-testis barrier, demonstrating the potential reproductive dysfunctions caused by microplastics.

Human exposure to microplastics: A study in Iran

Sajjad Abbasi et al.

Summary: The study quantitatively assessed the exposure of microplastics to adults from different regions of Iran. It found that the highest amount of microplastics were retrieved from head hair, while the lowest were from saliva. Males were exposed to about twice as much microplastics as females. The most abundant type of microplastics found in all body receptors were polyethylene-polyethylene terephthalate and polypropylene fibres of < 100 μm in length.
