On a comprehensive analysis for mechanical problems of spherical structures

Shahriar Dastjerdi et al.

Summary: This paper applies a semi-analytical polynomial method (SAPM) to solve the mechanical governing equations of nano-sized spherical functionally graded structures. The SAPM is based on polynomial functions and assumes the spherical coordinate system. The results obtained are compared with those in other articles to examine the accuracy of the solution method.

Free vibration analysis of functionally graded porous cylindrical panels and shells with porosity distributions along the thickness and length directions

Yaqiang Xue et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the free vibration behaviors of functionally graded porous (FGP) cylindrical panels and shells. New distribution types along the length direction are considered for the first time. The isogeometric analysis (IGA) method is applied to solve this problem, and the accuracy is examined compared to published data. The results provide benchmark solutions for other algorithm research and guidelines for designing FGP structures.

Nonlinear transient analysis of porous P-FGM and S-FGM sandwich plates and shell panels under blast loading and thermal environment

Abhilash Karakoti et al.

Summary: The present work develops a simple and accurate finite element formulation based on C-0 continuity of transverse displacement for obtaining and comparing the nonlinear transient response of porous functionally graded material (FGM) sandwich plates and shell panels. Through validation and parametric studies, it is observed that the amplitude of the nonlinear transient response due to different blast loading can be controlled by selecting optimal parameters.

Thermo-mechanics of multi-directional functionally graded elastic sandwich plates

Sundaramoorthy Rajasekaran et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the static, stability, and free vibration behavior of multi-layer multi-directional functionally graded sandwich thin rectangular plates under thermo-mechanical loadings. Various physical properties and boundary conditions are considered, and the temperature-position-dependent physical properties are obtained using the rule of mixture. The modified differential quadrature method is used to model different types of plates. The results suggest that this methodology is effective, simple, and accurate. The study also presents the first investigation of MDFG plates and layered composite structures under thermo-mechanical conditions, and discusses the advantages of using MDFG sandwich plates.

Free vibration analysis and optimization of doubly-curved stiffened sandwich shells with functionally graded skins and auxetic honeycomb core layer

Hoang-Anh Pham et al.

Summary: This study introduces an analytical approach for the free vibration analysis of doubly curved stiffened sandwich shells with functionally graded face sheets and an auxetic honeycomb core layer. Numerical results show that the fundamental frequency is significantly influenced by the constituent materials of the face layers, the geometrical parameters of the auxetic honeycomb core layer, and the stiffeners. A simple optimization technique based on Rao algorithms is proposed to maximize the natural frequency of the shell by adjusting parameters such as the thickness of the core and the number of stiffeners.

Summary: The present study investigates the large displacement transient dynamic response of truncated conical panels made of P-FGMs using the GDQ method, considering geometric non-linearity and transverse shear effects. The study also explores the effects of different types of porosity distribution, porosity ratio, and conical parameters on the non-linear transient behavior.
