Construction of surrogate models for predicting the buckling strength of stiffened panels through DoE and RSM methods

Nikolaos Papanikolaou et al.

Summary: This study efficiently derived buckling strength formulas for stiffened panels through design of experiments and response surface methodology, combined with numerical nonlinear experimentation. The surrogate model developed for T-bar stiffeners accurately predicts ultimate stress, while models for angle bars and flat bars show differences from common structural rules. This is the first statistical-based formal approach to obtaining buckling surfaces for stiffened panels, with this research providing a framework for efficient surrogate model building in terms of required observations per stiffener type.

Multilevel Monte Carlo simulations of composite structures with uncertain manufacturing defects

Summary: By adopting the MLMC framework, this research demonstrates that only a small number of expensive fine-scale computations are needed to accurately estimate the failure statistics of a composite structure. The results show significant computational gains with the introduction of the MLMC method and selective refinement for efficiently calculating structural failure probabilities.

System-based reliability analysis of stainless steel frames under gravity loads

Itsaso Arrayago et al.

Summary: This paper presents an extension of the Direct Design Method (DDM) to the analysis of stainless steel structures, showing system reliability calibrations for six stainless steel portal frames under gravity loads. Suitable system safety factors and system resistance factors are proposed for the direct design of stainless steel frames in different design frameworks.

Stochastic geometric imperfections of plate elements and their impact on the probabilistic ultimate strength assessment of plates and hull-girders

Dimitris G. Georgiadis et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a novel approach for representing the imperfect geometry of ship structures using the theory of random fields, and evaluates its impact on the probabilistic ultimate strength of plates and hull-girders. The proposed model's selection and robustness are supported by literature data and real measurement campaigns on ships. Artificial neural networks are used to assess the variability of ultimate strength under the effect of stochastic imperfections.

A probabilistic approach to assess the computational uncertainty of ultimate strength of hull girders

Shen Li et al.

Summary: The study proposes a probabilistic approach to evaluate the prediction uncertainty of the ultimate strength of ship hull girders, and discusses the computational uncertainties of the case study vessels. It shows that merchant ships are primarily influenced by the ultimate compressive strength of critical stiffened panels, while naval vessels are also sensitive to the post-collapse response of critical members.
