Axial compressive behavior of concrete-filled steel tubes with GFRP-confined UHPC cores

Kaize Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, axial compression tests were conducted on 24 SCGU composite columns to analyze their damage morphology, load-strain curves, and influencing factors. The damage modes of the specimens included convex curves of the external steel tube, fragmentation of the plain internal concrete, fracture of GFRP, and large axial cracks of the UHPC core column. The load-displacement curves of the composite columns can be simplified into elastic, elastoplastic, and plastic flow stages. The study also presented a formula for the axial compression bearing capacity of the SCGU composite column and developed finite element models to simulate it.

Confinement-based direct design of circular steel tube confined concrete (STCC) short columns

M. F. Hassanein et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new design model to estimate the axial compressive resistance of circular steel tube confined concrete (STCC) short columns. The model takes into account the confinement effect of the outer steel tube on the concrete core. Experimental results show that most design codes are conservative, while most analytical design models are unconservative. Based on the experimental results, a new formula is proposed to evaluate the lateral confining pressure (frp) provided by the steel tube to the concrete core of different grades, and a confinement-based direct resistance design model is proposed.

Effect of strain gradient on the stress-strain relationship of FRP-confined ultra-high performance concrete

Huiwen Tian et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of strain gradient on the stress-strain relationship of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) confined ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC). The response of FRP-confined UHPC cylinders subjected to different levels of strain gradient was experimentally and numerically analyzed. The results show that the ultimate axial strain and the slope of the second branch are significantly affected by the strain gradient effect, with an increase of 20.8% and a decrease of 24.2%, respectively, under the highest level of applied strain gradient. The findings suggest that the strain gradient has negligible effect on the first branch of the stress-strain curve, but its effect on the second ascending branch depends on the level of FRP confinement.

Kunting Miao et al.

Summary: To effectively solve the corrosion problem of seawater and sea sand concrete in practical applications, a new structure called concrete-filled steel tube (CFT) columns with inner distributed fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) tubes filled with SSC is proposed. Testing 40 specimens, it is found that the ultimate strength of CFT columns with inner distributed SSC-filled FRP tubes increases with the thickness of FRP tube, diameter of FRP tube, and thickness of steel tube. The arrangement of inner FRP tubes improves the axial compression behavior and ductility of CFT columns.

Compressive performance of SWSSC-filled CFRP-stainless steel composite tube columns

Zhe Huang et al.

Summary: The study examines the structure of concrete confined by carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) and stainless steel tubes. The columns utilize the ductility and corrosion resistance of stainless steel and consist of stainless steel tube, core seawater and sea sand concrete (SWSSC) and outer FRP. Experimental results show that increasing the thickness of the stainless steel and the number of FRP layers significantly improves the load capacity and deformation capacity of the structure, especially in specimens with higher steel contents. Proposed models successfully predict the full axial stress-strain curves of SCFSSCTs, including the ultimate point and the peak point.

Exploration on unified calculation of axial compressive load-carrying capacity of square and rectangular concrete-filled steel tubular columns

Zhuang Zhao et al.

Summary: The calculations of the axial compressive load-carrying capacity of square concrete-filled steel tubular (SCFST) columns and rectangular concrete-filled steel tubular (RCFST) columns are complex due to the nonuniform constraints of the steel tubes on concrete. In this study, a unified model for the axial compression load-carrying capacity of SCFSTs and RCFSTs was established by creatively dividing the calculation of axial compression load-carrying capacity of RCFST columns into five parts using the superposition principle. The proposed model was verified using a database of 449 published RCFST and SCFST columns, and the influences of parameters on the load-carrying capacity of RCFSTs were studied in detail.

Comparative study of compressive behavior of confined NSC and UHPC/ UHPFRC cylinders externally wrapped with CFRP jacket

Weiwen Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the compressive behaviors of CFRP-confined NSC and UHPC/UHPFRC under concentric axial loading. The confined UHPC/UHPFRC exhibited different mechanical behavior, crack evolution, and dilation behavior compared to confined NSC. The CFRP confinement delayed shear crack formation and resulted in a linear increasing stage in the stress-strain curve of CFRP-confined UHPC/UHPFRC. Existing stress-strain models for CFRP-confined UHPC/UHPFRC were thoroughly evaluated in this study.

Summary: This study investigates the flexural behavior of UHPC materials containing steel fibers of varying lengths. Mesomechanical analysis is performed to simulate the flexural behavior of UHPC after cracking, and the evaluation of stress-strain along the axial crack of UHPC is conducted under different loading conditions. The results show that longer steel fibers can improve the flexural behavior of UHPC, and the fiber orientation and pullout length distributions can be fitted by probability distribution and Gaussian functions. Additionally, the length of the shear lag zone is independent of the fiber length.

Comparison of monotonic axial compressive behavior of rectangular concrete confined by FRP with different rupture strains

Yanlei Wang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the axial compressive behavior of rectangular concrete confined by FRP with different rupture strains, finding that the rupture strain of FRP significantly influenced the failure mode and deformation of the concrete; as the rupture strain of FRP increased, the strain reduction factors decreased due to more non-uniform dilation from larger rupture strain FRP. The axial stress vs. strain curves of the concrete confined by FRP could be categorized into three types based on the transition point and ultimate condition, including sufficient, moderate, and insufficient FRP confinement.
