Experimental investigation on debonding behavior of Fe-SMA-to-steel joints

Lingzhen Li et al.

Summary: This work is the first systematic study on the static behavior of adhesively-bonded Fe-SMA-to-steel joints. Through an experimental campaign involving lap-shear tests, the mechanical behavior of the joints was analyzed. Different types of Fe-SMAs, adhesives, and adhesive thicknesses were tested. The results showed that a more ductile or thicker adhesive layer had a higher bond capacity, and a nonlinear adhesive led to significant mechanical differences between Fe-SMA and CFRP bonded joints.

Influence of curing, post-curing and testing temperatures on mechanical properties of a structural adhesive

Younes Jahani et al.

Summary: This paper presents a comprehensive experimental investigation on the influence of temperature on mechanical properties and glass transition temperature (Tg) of a structural epoxy adhesive. The results show that the curing and post-curing temperature affect Tg and mechanical properties differently depending on whether the applied temperature is below or beyond the epoxy Tg.

Stability of steel columns with bolted strengthening under preload: Experimental study

Sizhe Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of preload on the stability of strengthened steel columns. Experimental results show that preload influences the behaviors of columns, including deformations, strains, and stresses, as well as the ultimate load capacity. The effect of preload on ultimate load capacity is generally insignificant, but it can be either favorable or unfavorable depending on the case. The combined effects of equivalent initial deformation and initial stresses contribute to the varying effect of preload.

Flexural behavior of light steel purlins reinforced by prestressed CFRP laminates

Lili Hu et al.

Summary: This study proposed a new technology using prestressed CFRP to reinforce steel purlins, successfully delaying flexural failure and improving flexural capacity and stiffness. It also provided an accurate calculation method, offering important references for reinforcing cold-formed thin-walled steel beams.

Stability of steel columns strengthened under preload: Numerical study with experimental validation

Sizhe Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of preload on the stability of strengthened steel columns. Through numerical and parametric studies, it is found that the preload level, section geometry, steel properties, and column length are key factors influencing the preload effect. A prediction model is proposed and validated, demonstrating its capability of providing accurate predictions.

Experimental study on Fe-SMA-to-steel adhesively bonded interfaces using DIC

Wandong Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the interface behavior of Fe-SMA strips bonded to metallic substrates through single lap-shear tests, finding that the bond strength can reach over 70% of the Fe-SMA tensile strength and identifying three energy dissipation mechanisms during debonding. The experimentally obtained bond-slip relations represent more than just adhesive failure energy dissipation.

Experimental behavior of iron-based shape memory alloys under cyclic loading histories

Diego Isidoro Heredia Rosa et al.

Summary: The study investigates the behavior of iron-based shape memory alloys subjected to cyclic inelastic straining. Fe-SMAs exhibit an asymmetric stress-strain relation and higher hardening response compared to conventional structural steels, leading to comparatively larger elastic strain energies being stored.

Stress recovery behavior of an Fe-Mn-Si shape memory alloy

Xiang-Lin Gu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the stress recovery behavior of an Fe-Mn-Si-Cr-Ni-VC shape memory alloy for prestressed strengthening. The effects of different prestrain levels, activation temperatures, and initial preloads on recovery stress were evaluated to propose an optimum activation strategy. Additionally, mechanical properties of the alloy after activation, including performance under high-temperature activation and high-cycle fatigue loadings, were studied.

Novel fatigue strengthening solution for metallic structures using adhesively bonded Fe-SMA strips: A proof of concept study

Wandong Wang et al.

Summary: The study proposes an innovative fatigue strengthening solution for metallic structures using iron-based shape memory alloy and bonding technique. Experimental results demonstrate that bonded prestressed Fe-SMA strips are much more effective than traditional CFRP strips in retarding fatigue crack growth, extending the fatigue crack growth life by a factor of 3.51.
