Flexural behaviour of the composite sandwich beams with grid-scored foam: Experimental and theoretical approach

F. Balikoglu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the load-displacement response and failure behavior of grid-scored foam cored sandwich beams under three- and four-point bending tests with different span lengths. The accurate prediction of the elastic properties of grid-scored polymer foam core is achieved using a simple analytical rule of mixtures approach. Theoretical formulations are used to predict failure loads and mid-span deflections by accounting for equivalent shear and bending stiffness of the sandwich beam and are compared to the experimental results.

Study on the low-velocity impact response of foam-filled multi-cavity composite panels

Jiye Chen et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the influence of lattice-web layout on the low-velocity impact performance of foam filled multi-cavity composite panels (FMCPs) and develops an energy balance model to predict the peak loads of the FMCPs. The study demonstrates that FMCP with double-layer dislocation webs can be used as an effective energy buffer due to its light weight and great energy absorption capacity. Numerical models and parametric analysis on GFRP thickness and foam density were also conducted in the study.

Geometrically nonlinear dynamic analysis of variable stiffness composite laminated and sandwich shell panels

Ankita Gupta et al.

Summary: In this study, the nonlinear free and forced vibration analyses of variable stiffness composite laminated (VSCL) and sandwich shell panels with curvilinear fibers were conducted using a higher-order theory. The structural model considered a third-order shear deformation theory, and geometric nonlinearity was included through von Karman nonlinear strain-displacement relations. The results were compared with existing exact and analytical solutions to validate the model.

Joel Galos et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the research on the applications, manufacturing, properties, and performance of sandwich structures with balsa wood cores. Balsa wood offers advantages such as environmental sustainability, low cost, excellent mechanical properties, and thermal insulation. However, challenges including global supply chain issues and limitations in processing techniques, as well as impact, blast, fire, and water durability, need to be addressed. The paper also discusses future research directions for balsa structural sandwich materials.

Analysis of sandwich structures with corrugated and spiderweb-inspired cores for aerospace applications

K. Tewari et al.

Summary: The bending response of laminated composite sandwich structures developed for aircraft flaps is analyzed in this study. The results show that the designed composite structure can withstand higher loads and has higher flexural stiffness. The performance of the structure can be further improved by optimizing the core design. In addition, a novel bio-inspired spiderweb core design is developed, which has better stiffness compared to traditional corrugated core structures. Scaling and patterning of the geometry are investigated, and hail impact simulations are performed to estimate maximum induced stresses and peak forces.

Summary: The study investigated an optimized BFRP-concrete composite bridge deck, showing lower deflections and good load capacities compared to previous studies, thus achieving higher short-term cost performance. The FE model using creep models for FRP and concrete showed good agreement with experimental results in both short and long-term scenarios. Numerical simulation indicated that the bridge deck can sustain loads for 50 years with allowable load level meeting ACI standards for creep deflection.

Effect of fibre layup and bearing length on the web-crippling behaviour of pultruded GFRP profiles

Lourenco Almeida-Fernandes et al.

Summary: This experimental study investigated the web-crippling behavior of pultruded glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) profiles under end two flange (ETF) and interior two flange (ITF) configurations with varying bearing lengths. The results showed that changes in fiber layups did not significantly affect the stiffness and ultimate loads of the profiles, but the bearing length had a significant impact on the failure mode, stiffness, and ultimate load of all I-section profiles. Despite significant differences in geometrical and material properties, all I-section profiles exhibited similar transverse compressive strain distributions under the same loading conditions.
