Modeling fracture of multidirectional thin-ply laminates using an anisotropic phase field formulation at the macro-scale

Anatoli Mitrou et al.

Summary: In this study, an equivalent single layer approach using the Phase Field method is developed to model fracture events in multidirectional balanced thin-ply laminates. The anisotropic nature of the laminates is accounted for by introducing a structural tensor based on scaled directional vectors. The scaling constants are defined using the laminate lay-up and intra-laminar fracture toughness, reducing the number of input parameters and providing a new perspective on their definition. The proposed formulation is implemented using an anisotropic conductivity matrix in Abaqus, simplifying the simulations. Experimental results are successfully reproduced, validating the model for size effects and off-axis loading responses.

A phase-field framework for failure modeling of variable stiffness composite laminae

Z. Z. Pan et al.

Summary: The study presents a multi-phase-field approach for failure analyses of VSC laminae at mesoscale, revealing that cracks propagate along fiber orientations in notched VSC laminae and a progressive failure mode can be observed in certain designs. Guidance for designing VSCs with discontinuities is provided based on modeling results, which may promote the application of VSCs in automotive and aerospace structures.

Phase field fracture predictions of microscopic bridging behaviour of composite materials

Wei Tan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the role of microstructural bridging on the fracture toughness of composite materials. A new computational framework is proposed to simulate various fracture processes and validate its accuracy. The results show that microstructural bridging can significantly enhance the fracture toughness, particularly the 3D fibre bridging effect. These findings shed light on microscopic bridging mechanisms and provide important guidance for developing high fracture toughness composites.

Effectiveness of fibre placement in 3D printed open-hole composites under uniaxial tension

Haoqi Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper comprehensively studies the effect of fibre placement on the mechanical performance of open-hole composites under uniaxial tension. A hybrid manufacturing technology is presented to enable the fabrication of 3D printed dual-polymer composites with low porosity and customised continuous carbon fibre reinforcement. Placing continuous fibres along the maximum principal stress trajectories improves the strength of the composites and postpones crack initiation. Additional fibres along the minimum principal stress trajectories and around the hole dramatically alter the failure mode and mechanical performance of the samples. A finite element model based on the actual printing paths is developed to understand the stress distributions caused by different fibre placement methods.

3D printing of continuous carbon fibre reinforced powder-based epoxy composites

Haoqi Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper presents an experimental study on 3D printing of continuous carbon fibre reinforced thermoset epoxy composites. The study shows that the produced composites have high tensile strength and modulus in the fibre direction due to the good wettability of epoxy and high fibre volume fraction. The study also demonstrates the design freedom of the produced filaments for complex geometries and the improved strength of composites with designed stress-lines fibre paths.

Effects of ply angle and blocking on open-hole tensile strength of composite laminates: A design and certification perspective

T. R. C. Chuaqui et al.

Summary: The strength of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic laminates under open-hole tension can be significantly affected by ply angle, ply blocking, and loading direction. Experimental and finite element analysis testing shows that matrix damage can both benefit and decrease strength, with a proposed numerical edge treatment resulting in up to 80% strength increases by suppressing edge failure in certain applications. These findings challenge the validity of standard open-hole tension testing and design rules.
