Spatio-temporal rainfall variability and trend analysis in the Tekeze-Atbara river basin, northwestern Ethiopia

Bizuneh Asfaw Abebe et al.

Summary: This study investigates the spatial and temporal rainfall variability in the Tekeze river basin. Results show moderate annual rainfall variability in the basin. Seasonal rainfall variability is higher, with most of the rain occurring in less than 3 months. There is no significant annual rainfall trend in the basin, except for a few stations. The study suggests the need for water harvesting measures during the dry periods.

Annual and seasonal rainfall trend analysis using gridded dataset in the Wabe Shebele River Basin, Ethiopia

Megersa Adugna Gurara et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the long-term rainfall trends in the Wabe Shebele River Basin in Ethiopia from 1920 to 2019. The results indicate a non-significant decrease in rainfall trends in most sub-basins and the entire basin, with trends varying within +/- 10%. The findings show that rainfall trends are not uniform spatially and temporally, and there is no significant trend at a 5% significant level in most sub-basins. The ITA method performs better in trend investigation compared to the Mann-Kendall test and Sen's slope estimator method.

Precipitation Moisture Sources of Ethiopian River Basins and Their Role During Drought Conditions

Milica Stojanovic et al.

Summary: In this study, the annual climatological moisture sources for Ethiopian river basins during 1980-2018 were identified and investigated. The findings revealed the contributions of terrestrial and oceanic moisture sources, as well as their impacts on different regions. Additionally, the study analyzed the years affected by drought conditions.

Agroecology-based soil erosion assessment for better conservation planning in Ethiopian river basins

Ayele Almaw Fenta et al.

Summary: Soil erosion by water is a major environmental concern in Ethiopia, with cropland, river basins, and agroecological zones being the main areas affected. Implementing specific land management practices can significantly reduce soil loss and support sustainable use of land and water resources, particularly in severely eroded areas like the Abay and Tekeze basins and Dega and Weyna Dega agroecologies.

Spatial Variability and Temporal Trends of Climate Change in Southwest Ethiopia: Association with Farmers' Perception and Their Adaptation Strategies

Abera Habte et al.

Summary: The study revealed high spatial variability of rainfall in the region with no consistent and significant annual and seasonal trends. Significant upward trends in annual maximum and minimum temperatures were observed at all weather stations. Farmers showed good awareness of climate change, with adaptation strategies focusing on soil and water conservation practices, crop diversification, modification of planting dates, agroforestry, and the use of drought-tolerant varieties. Efforts are needed to identify barriers to wider adoption of these strategies and to provide additional support to strengthen farmers' adaptive capacity.

Analysis of Climate Variability and Trends in Southern Ethiopia

Abrham Belay et al.

Summary: The study found significant variability and change in rainfall and temperature over southern Ethiopia from 1983 to 2016, leading to prolonged drought and flood events. Increased frequency of droughts and floods highlights the importance of appropriate interventions and adjustments to climate change.
