Paleogeographic evolution and vertical motion of the central Lesser Antilles forearc since the Early Miocene: A potential driver for land fauna dispersals between the americas

Jean-Jacques Cornee et al.

Summary: Phylogenetic studies suggest that faunal dispersals between South America and the Greater Antilles may have occurred through the Lesser Antilles during the Cenozoic. However, the migration paths used by their ancestors remain unknown due to the lack of geological data. This study presents novel paleogeographic maps of the central Lesser Antilles, revealing repetitive episodes of uplift and drowning during the Neogene and suggesting the existence of large drowned archipelagos during the Miocene.

Influence of Data Filters on the Position and Precision of Paleomagnetic Poles: What Is the Optimal Sampling Strategy?

Dieke Gerritsen et al.

Summary: This study shows that the commonly used data filters in the paleomagnetic community cannot effectively identify unreliable paleomagnetic directions. The exclusion of unreliable directions still relies on subjective interpretation by experts, highlighting the importance of making all data available following the FAIR principles. Additionally, data filters that decrease the number of sites have a negative impact on the precision of paleopoles, therefore, more emphasis should be placed on collecting more single-sample sites.

Review of Geochronologic and Geochemical Data of the Greater Antilles Volcanic Arc and Implications for the Evolution of Oceanic Arcs

H. Y. Hu et al.

Summary: This study compiled geochronologic and geochemical data of igneous and metamorphic rocks in the Greater Antilles islands to investigate the formation and evolution of the Greater Antilles Arc (GAA). The results indicate that the GAA started in the Early Cretaceous and ceased in the Paleogene, and it was influenced by the Caribbean Large Igneous Province.

On Pole Position: Causes of Dispersion of the Paleomagnetic Poles Behind Apparent Polar Wander Paths

Bram Vaes et al.

Summary: Paleomagnetic poles used to compute apparent polar wander paths (APWPs) are strongly dispersed, with paleopoles derived from sedimentary rocks or datasets underrepresenting paleosecular variation (PSV) being more dispersed and frequently displaced. The number of sites used to calculate a paleopole is arbitrary, and smaller tectonic displacements require larger paleomagnetic datasets.

Geological architecture and history of the Antigua volcano and carbonate platform: Was there an Oligo-Miocene lull in Lesser Antilles arc magmatism?

Leny Montheil et al.

Summary: This study investigates the volcanic rock records of the northern Lesser Antilles arc and finds that subduction can occur without generating magmas under specific geodynamic circumstances. Through the study of Antigua Island, the researchers determine that the cessation of magmatic activity on the island occurred at 35 Ma, possibly due to slab flattening.

Evolution of a Shallow Volcanic Arc Pluton During Arc Migration: A Tectono-Thermal Integrated Study of the St. Martin Granodiorites (Northern Lesser Antilles)

Melanie Noury et al.

Summary: A new dataset has been used to study the tectono-thermal evolution of the St. Martin granodiorite, revealing a complex history of emplacement to surface exposure. The vertical motions in the upper plate of the Lesser Antilles subduction zone and the migration of the volcanic arc are closely linked to this evolution. The four-step history of the granodioritic pluton's emplacement and subsequent cooling and exhumation has been reconstructed, providing insights into the tectonic processes in this region over the past 30 million years.

Inferring Interseismic Coupling Along the Lesser Antilles Arc: A Bayesian Approach

E. M. van Rijsingen et al.

Summary: The study assesses the level of interseismic coupling in the Lesser Antilles subduction zone, revealing low to very low coupling along the entire plate interface. This challenges the previous idea that historical earthquakes in the area were thrust events, suggesting instead that they occurred deeper within the downgoing plate. Additionally, updated GPS velocities show some along-arc extension, consistent with geological observations of active normal faulting within the arc.

Deep Structure of the Grenada Basin From Wide-Angle Seismic, Bathymetric and Gravity Data

Crelia Padron et al.

Summary: The Grenada back-arc basin is located between the Aves Ridge and Lesser Antilles Arc, with varying sedimentary cover thickness and velocity structures in different parts of the basin. The opening of the basin likely proceeded in a direction oblique to the main convergence, with widespread volcanism accompanying the process. More research is needed to explore the direction of opening and the extent of the oceanic-type crust underneath the modern island arc in the southeastern part of the basin.

Genetic Relations Between the Aves Ridge and the Grenada Back-Arc Basin, East Caribbean Sea

Clement Garrocq et al.

Summary: This study refines the understanding of the basement structure, depositional history, tectonic deformation, and vertical motions of the Grenada Basin and its margins by combining a large set of deep-penetrating multichannel seismic reflection data and dredge samples with published data. The study reveals the late Paleocene-early Eocene rifting in a NW-SE direction and subsequent seafloor spreading during the middle Eocene, as well as the subsidence of the Aves Ridge along with the Grenada Basin since at least the middle Eocene. The findings also suggest that bathymetric highs remained shallow enough to develop carbonate platforms until the late Miocene.

Reliability of palaeomagnetic poles from sedimentary rocks

Bram Vaes et al.

Summary: Palaeomagnetic poles are essential for quantitative palaeogeographic reconstructions, but reliability of poles from sedimentary rocks is challenging. By studying inclination shallowing correction methods, quality criteria can be established for assessing the reliability of palaeomagnetic poles, providing a useful classification system.

Paleogene V-Shaped Basins and Neogene Subsidence of the Northern Lesser Antilles Forearc

M. Boucard et al.

Summary: Oblique collision of buoyant provinces against subduction zones often leads to individualizing and rotating regional-scale blocks, while the collision of the Bahamas Bank against the Northeastern Caribbean Plate resulted in forearc fragmentation and formation of small-scale blocks. High-resolution bathymetric and deep seismic data reveal a dramatic tectonic evolution in the Northern Lesser Antilles forearc, with block rotations, forearc fracturing, and V-shaped valleys opening during a past tectonic phase related to margin bending and block rotation.

Timing and magnitude of progressive exhumation and deformation associated with Eocene arc-continent collision in the NE Caribbean plate

Y. A. Roman et al.

Summary: The study reveals that deformation associated with arc-continent collision in Puerto Rico and the northern Virgin Islands occurred from the early Eocene to the early Oligocene, involving transpressional deformation, fault system extension, and crustal exhumation. Puerto Rico experienced gradual deformation over a 23 million year timeframe, with punctuated episodes of vertical exhumation, while the northern Virgin Islands underwent rapid cooling and exhumation in the early Miocene.

Lost islands in the northern Lesser Antilles: possible milestones in the Cenozoic dispersal of terrestrial organisms between South-America and the Greater Antilles

Jean-Jacques Cornee et al.

Summary: Our study reconstructs the palaeogeography of the northern part of the Lesser Antilles to analyze potential emerged areas during the Cenozoic era, allowing for terrestrial faunal dispersals between South America and the Greater Antilles. It reveals sequences of uplift and emergence during specific periods, indicating the existence of episodic mega-islands and transient terrestrial connections between different regions.

The tectono-sedimentary framework of the large strait shows contrasting patterns of deformation linked to a complex polyphase tectonic history of dominantly strike-slip faulting.
