The late Holocene history of Lake Cahuilla: Two thousand years of repeated fillings within the Salton Trough, Imperial Valley, California

Thomas K. Rockwell et al.

Summary: This study constrains the timing of past lake highstands in the Salton Trough using radiocarbon dating. The researchers developed two OxCal models and compiled reliable dates from paleoseismic and archeological sites. By comparing the models and incorporating historical accounts and paleohydrologic reconstruction, they determined the age ranges for seven lake highstands. However, the presence of age inheritance in the samples must be considered.

Probabilistic fault displacement hazard analysis of the Anghiari - Citta di Castello normal fault (Italy)

Alessio Testa et al.

Summary: The study applied a probabilistic approach called probabilistic fault displacement hazard analysis to analyze the Anghiari-Citta di Castello fault in the northern Apennines of Italy. The results showed that the expected displacement values for the principal fault rupturing can reach up to 130 cm, while the distributed rupturing hazard is 3-4% of the principal fault rupturing hazard. The variability of the distributed rupturing hazard within the first hundreds of meters from the fault can help in defining mitigation strategies for existing facilities near the fault.

Probabilistic Fault Displacement Hazard Assessment (PFDHA) for Nuclear Installations According to IAEA Safety Standards

Alessandro Valentini et al.

Summary: In response to emerging fault displacement hazard evaluation practices, IAEA revised its safety standards for site evaluations of nuclear installations in the last 10 years, explicitly recommending fault displacement hazard assessment and probabilistic fault displacement hazard analysis. This article provides an overview of current PFDHA state-of-practice for nuclear installations consistent with the new IAEA safety standards, and summarizes progress in an ongoing international PFDHA benchmark project.

Large Holocene ruptures on the Canada David detachment, Baja California, Mexico; implications for the seismogenesis of low-angle normal faults

Keene W. Karlsson et al.

Summary: Detailed mapping and paleoseismic investigations along a fault scarp array associated with the Canada David detachment in Baja California, Mexico, revealed evidence of Holocene and late Pleistocene earthquakes with a recurrence interval of about 3,000 years. The mechanical behavior of misoriented low-angle normal faults like the Canada David detachment is similar to more optimally oriented faults, suggesting that earthquakes on such faults may be common and difficult to recognize using seismological methods.

Ground-penetrating radar signature of Quaternary faulting: a study from the Mt. Pollino region, southern Apennines, Italy

Maurizio Ercoli et al.

Summary: The study utilized ground-penetrating radar to uncover evidence of Late Quaternary faulting along the Fosso della Valle-Campotenese normal fault in the southern Apennines. Through detailed data interpretation and processing, a reliable subsurface fault pattern was reconstructed, distinguishing master faults and secondary splays. The results provide valuable insights into the geological structures within the Pollino seismic gap, encouraging further research in similar high seismic hazard regions.

GPR Detection of Fossil Structures in Conductive Media Supported by FDTD Modelling and Attributes Analysis: An Example from Early Pleistocene Marine Clay at Bargiano Site (Central Italy)

Maurizio Ercoli et al.

Summary: The application of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) prospecting in paleontology, particularly using advanced techniques like Finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) modeling and GPR attribute analysis, is promoted in Bargiano, central Italy. The study site's uneven topography presents challenges for GPR surveying, but by simulating buried fossil structures and comparing with experimental data, a workflow that extends surface information in depth in a non-invasive way is achieved, optimizing field operations for site preservation.
