Ediacaran magmatism and rifting along the northern margin of the Tarim craton: Implications for the late Neoproterozoic Rodinia configuration and breakup

Hong -Xiang Wu et al.

Summary: This study presents new stratigraphic, geochemical, and geochronological data from the Tarim craton in Central Asia, and discusses its tectonic evolution and paleogeographic position in the Neoproterozoic supercontinent Rodinia. The results show a switch from terrestrial to shallow-marine deposition after the eruption of basaltic lava flows, and the absence of Tonian-aged zircons in post-rift sedimentary sequence, indicating the final breakup of Rodinia. The study suggests that mantle plume activities may have played a role in the breakup of Rodinia.

P-T-t-D records of Early Palaeozoic Andean-type shortening of a hot active margin: The Dunhuang block in NW China

Jeremie Soldner et al.

Summary: In this study, the P-T-t-D paths of Early Palaeozoic HP granulite facies rocks from the Dunhuang block in northwest China were investigated to understand the tectonic setting and geodynamic evolution of a modern hot orogenic system. The results revealed the different tectonic environments and metamorphic evolution processes between the granulites and migmatitic metapelites, providing important insights into the dynamics of active margin settings.

Early Paleozoic Cascadia-type active-margin evolution of the Dunhuang block (NW China): Geochemical and geochronological constraints

Jeremie Soldner et al.

Summary: The origins of early Paleozoic metabasites and their host metasedimentary rocks in the Dunhuang block, NW China, have been studied using new geochronological and geochemical data. It is suggested that the metabasites can be divided into two groups, with group I originating from an enriched lithospheric mantle and group II from a depleted asthenospheric mantle. The metasedimentary rocks are similar in composition to active-margin sediments and received detritus mainly from a neighboring Cambrian magmatic arc. High-grade metamorphism occurred during the Late Ordovician-early Silurian. A Cascadia-type evolution is proposed, involving stretching of the Cambrian active continental margin during the Ordovician-early Silurian and mantle upwelling.

Late Paleoproterozoic orogenic evolution of the northern Tarim Craton, NW China: Insights from phase equilibrium modeling and zircon U-Pb geochronology of metapelitic granulite in the Kuluketage area

Yu Guo et al.

Summary: The global paleoproterozoic orogenic evolution plays an important role in understanding the assembly of the Columbia supercontinent. This study focuses on the northern Tarim region and reveals a paleoproterozoic tectono-thermal event related to the Columbia supercontinent assembly. However, the limited metamorphic investigations hindered the recognition of paleoproterozoic orogenic evolution in the northern Tarim, impacting the understanding of the relationship between Tarim Craton and the Columbia supercontinent. The study conducted petrography, zircon U-Pb geochronology, and phase equilibria modeling to analyze metapelitic granulite samples from the Xingditage Group. The results provide insights into the paleoproterozoic orogenic evolution in the northern Tarim Craton and propose a tectonic evolution scenario involving a collision with an unknown block prior to approximately 1.85 Ga.

Paleozoic Subduction-Accretion in the Southern Central Asian Orogenic Belt: Insights From the Wuwamen Accretionary Complex of the Chinese South Tianshan

Xin-Shui Wang et al.

Summary: The Wuwamen accretionary complex in the Chinese South Tianshan provides important insights into the architecture and evolution of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt. Geochemical and age data indicate diverse origins for the exotic blocks within the complex. The accretionary processes in the complex were active from the early Ordovician to the late Carboniferous. These findings underscore the significant control of long-lasting accretionary processes and terminal collision on the southwestern CAOB.

Mid-Neoproterozoic collision of the Tarim Craton with the Yili-Central Tianshan Block towards the final assembly of Supercontinent Rodinia: A new model

Hong-Xiang Wu et al.

Summary: This study presents a new tectonic model to explain a mid-Neoproterozoic collisional orogeny in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB), which occurred during the final assembly of the Rodinia supercontinent. The proposed model challenges the prevailing hypothesis of steady-state subduction-accretion tectonic evolution of the CAOB and provides a new perspective based on regional geological evidence.

Formation and evolution of Archean continental crust: A thermodynamic-geochemical perspective of granitoids from the Tarim Craton, NW China

Rongfeng Ge et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the Archean geological record of the Tarim Craton and proposes a new model for the formation and evolution of Archean continental crust. The study reveals that most Archean TTGs were formed by water-fluxed melting of thick proto-arcs built on thick Archean oceanic crust, while rare high-pressure TTGs were formed by water-fluxed melting of subducted arcs during intermittent subduction and arc accretion.

Early Devonian tectonic conversion from contraction to extension in the Chinese Western Tianshan: A response to slab rollback

Xin-Shui Wang et al.

Summary: Extensive angular unconformities in the Tianshan Orogen provide insights into the Paleozoic tectonic evolution of the southwestern Central Asian Orogenic Belt. New geochronological and geochemical data from the Baluntai domain reveal that the angular unconformity formed between 409 and 407 Ma, as a result of tectonic conversion from contraction to extension due to slab rollback during the early Devonian. The early Paleozoic and late Paleozoic igneous rocks exhibit subduction-related geochemical signatures, indicating distinct tectonic processes in the region's long-lived accretionary evolution.

Long-lived seamount subduction in ancient orogens: Evidence from the Paleozoic South Tianshan

Bo Wan et al.

Summary: Research shows that ancient orogens may contain evidence of seamount subduction, which can temporarily shut down arc magmatism and quickly exhumed eclogites, influencing both crustal and mantle processes. Identifying these signatures in ancient orogens could provide a more complete picture of plume-subduction interaction and its effects.

The Missing Magmatic Arc in a Long-Lived Ocean From the Western Kunlun- Pamir Paleo-Tethys Realm

Gong-Jian Tang et al.

Summary: The evolution of the western Kunlun-Pamir region involved the opening and closing of several branches of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean. The absence of a magmatic arc between ca. 300-250 Ma was due to oceanic crust underthrusting, rather than oceanic subduction. This study provides an important example of how an oceanic basin opened and closed without oceanic subduction.

Extending full-plate tectonic models into deep time: Linking the Neoproterozoic and the Phanerozoic

Summary: Recent progress in plate tectonic reconstructions has expanded beyond continental drift to reconstruct the full evolving configuration of tectonic plates and plate boundaries. A continuous full-plate model spanning 1 billion years to present-day has been developed, incorporating a revised model for the Neoproterozoic-Cambrian period and connecting it with models of the Phanerozoic. The model is geologically constrained and based on preserved data from past plate boundaries, with the goal of providing a detailed and self-consistent tectonic reconstruction for the last billion years of Earth's history.

Flow of Devonian anatectic crust in the accretionary Altai Orogenic Belt, central Asia: Insights into horizontal and vertical magma transfer

Sheng Wang et al.

Summary: The research on a Devonian migmatite-granite complex from the Chinese Altai sheds light on the gradual evolution of the complex, documenting two main Devonian phases of deformation and the flow of partially molten crust. The findings reveal that Devonian anatexis assisted by deformation drove first horizontal and then vertical flow of partially molten orogenic lower crust, leading to crustal flow, mass redistribution, and crustal differentiation in the accretionary system of the Chinese Altai.
