Disciplined autonomy: How business analytics complements customer involvement for digital innovation

Summary: The rise of big data and digital products has led companies to use business analytics (BA) to enhance customer involvement. The complementarity view suggests that using BA can generate unique value that is difficult to replicate. Our research explores the interactions between BA and customer involvement capabilities, and finds that both a top-down mechanism and a bottom-up mechanism are required for realizing BA value. We also discover that BA culture has a stronger effect in complementing existing capabilities than BA skills.

There is a paucity of academic research in this area, and to address this gap, a qualitative study was conducted among healthcare providers in the United Kingdom. The study identified barriers and inhibiting factors from the perspectives of healthcare providers, organizations, patients, and end-users, and proposed a conceptual framework grounded in innovation resistance theory.
