Predictors of early and late mortality after the treatment for early gastric cancers

Summary: This study aimed to clarify the predictors of early and late mortality in patients with early gastric cancers (EGCs). Factors such as age, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Performance Status, Charlson comorbidity index, American Society of Anesthesiologists Physical Status, and C-reactive protein/albumin ratio were identified as important predictors for both early and late mortality. Additionally, male gender, intermediate/high-risk of LNM in eCura system, and sarcopenia evaluated by the psoas muscle mass index were predictors for early mortality. The results suggest that a combined assessment of multiple predictors may help predict mortality outcomes in EGC patients.

Laparoscopic Sentinel Node Navigation Surgery for Stomach Preservation in Patients With Early Gastric Cancer: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Summary: This study compared laparoscopic sentinel node navigation surgery (LSNNS) with laparoscopic standard gastrectomy (LSG) in terms of postoperative complications, long-term survival, and quality of life (QOL). The study found that LSNNS did not show superiority to LSG in 3-year disease-free survival (3y-DFS). However, there were no differences in 3-year disease-specific survival (3y-DSS) and 3-year overall survival (3y-OS) after rescue surgery in cases of recurrence/metachronous gastric cancer. LSNNS also showed better long-term QOL and nutrition than LSG.
