Impact of State Opioid Regulation on Postoperative Opioid Prescribing Patterns for Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Retrospective Analysis

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of Florida House Bill 21 on postoperative opioid prescribing for patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The study found that after the implementation of the bill, there was a significant reduction in opioid prescriptions for patients at the time of discharge and during the 90-day postsurgical episode, with no increase in the number of prescribers or refills required.

Association Between State Opioid Prescribing Limits and Duration of Opioid Prescriptions From Dentists

Summary: This cross-sectional study found that state opioid prescribing limits, which mostly allowed up to a 7-day supply of opioids, were not associated with changes in the duration of opioid prescriptions from dentists for both children and adults. The median duration of these prescriptions was 3.0 days. The study suggests the need for future research to evaluate alternative interventions to reduce dental opioid prescribing.

Multi-Modal Analgesic Strategy for Trauma: A Pragmatic Randomized Clinical Trial

Summary: This study compared two multimodal pain regimens (MMPRs) and found that patients randomized to receive the MAST MMPR had lower oral morphine milligram equivalents (MMEs) per day and fewer were prescribed opioids at discharge. However, there was no clinically significant difference in pain scores. The MAST MMPR appears to be an effective approach to reduce opioid exposure and achieve adequate acute pain control in trauma patients.

Long-term Success With Diminished Opioid Prescribing After Implementation of Standardized Postoperative Opioid Prescribing Guidelines: An Interrupted Time Series Analysis

Summary: The study assessed longitudinal prescribing patterns for patients undergoing urologic surgery before and after implementation of an evidence-based opioid prescribing guideline. The results showed a significant decrease in opioid quantity prescribed after guideline implementation, with overall guideline adherence at 90.7%. Despite the decrease in opioids prescribed, patients post-guideline implementation obtained fewer refills compared to pre-guideline implementation.
