Steering On-Surface Reactions by Kinetic and Thermodynamic Strategies

Tao Wang et al.

Summary: On-surface synthesis is an effective tool for fabricating functional low-dimensional nanostructures. The challenge lies in efficiently controlling reaction pathways and improving the yield/quality of the products. Various kinetic and thermodynamic strategies have been successfully employed to address this problem. Understanding the mechanisms of on-surface reactions and designing reaction procedures are crucial for the fabrication of high-quality functional nanomaterials on surfaces.

Chemisorption-Induced Formation of Biphenylene Dimer on Ag(111)

Zhiwen Zeng et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the clear interdependence between surface-supported reactions and molecular-adsorption configurations, revealing completely different reaction pathways for two biphenyl-based molecules with different bromine substituents on an Ag(111) surface. The underlying reaction mechanism is unraveled through a combination of techniques including low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. Different chemisorption-induced precursor states between the molecules ultimately lead to distinct reaction pathways, highlighting the importance of surface interactions in determining reaction outcomes.

Jong Hwan Park et al.

Summary: In this study, the array structure of 2,8-dibromoindeno[1,2-b]fluorene-6,12-dione on Au(111) surface was reported and an alternating-tread stair structure molecular model was proposed to explain its formation. The study shows that these molecules can form phase-separated homoprochiral structures on the surface, leading to potential applications in molecular chiral separation.

Chiral nanoporous networks featuring various chiral vertices from an achiral molecule on Ag(100)

Dong Han et al.

Summary: Chiral nanoporous nanoarchitectures built from achiral molecules on Ag(100) exhibit diverse shapes and sizes with strict chirality correlation between nanopores and their vertices. The chiral vertices within networks are dimeric, trimeric, or tetrameric, and enantiomeric vertices of one-pair nanopore enantiomers are always in identical type but opposite handedness. These chiral nanopores could potentially serve as templates for surface reaction, chiral recognition, and other applications.

Coverage-Induced Chiral Transition of Co(II)-5,15-Diphenylporphyrin Self-Assemblies on Cu(111)

Feifei Xiang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that Cobalt(II)-diphenylporphyrin (Co-DPP) on Cu (111) follows Wallach's rule, showing that chiral induction can occur when adsorbed prochiral molecules interact with substrates. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the chiral recognition, separation, and phase mixture of Co-DPP are a result of the synergistic mechanism between substrate-molecule and molecule-molecule interactions.

Selective synthesis of Kagome nanoporous graphene on Ag(111) via an organometallic template

Xingyu Li et al.

Summary: This study reports the bottom-up fabrication of pristine NPG with Kagome topology on Ag(111) via classic Ullmann coupling using a halogenated precursor. The templating effect of organometallic intermediates for covalent coupling was identified, with reaction parameters having a significant impact on the quality and topology of the intermediates. The work confirms the generality of the organometallic template effect and offers a novel method for selective synthesis of Kagome lattice networks.

Summary: A study has reported reconfigurable chiral nanostructures with silicon nanoparticles and nanowires, allowing for tailored configurations and chiroptical responses. The optical chirality arises from the coupling between optical resonances of the silicon nanoparticle and nanowire, enabling label-free enantiodiscrimination of biomolecules in single structures. This research provides insights into high-index material design and new strategies for adaptive devices in photonic and electronic applications.

Thermal- vs Light-Induced On-Surface Polymerization

Christophe Nacci et al.

Summary: On-surface polymerization is a powerful method to form covalent structures with defined properties using the two-dimensional confinement of a single crystal surface. Thermal heating is commonly used to initiate the reaction, while light-induced polymerization is less utilized. A comparison of thermal and light-induced on-surface polymerization of dibromo-anthracene molecules reveals differences in polymer length and structure formation.

Asymmetric azide-alkyne Huisgen cycloaddition on chiral metal surfaces

Samuel Stolz et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of chirality transfer and ensemble effect on thermally activated azide-alkyne Huisgen cycloaddition on well-defined and chiral intermetallic PdGa{111} surfaces. Dominating ensemble effect and chirality transfer from the substrate to reaction products are observed, revealing the potential of PdGa as an asymmetric heterogeneous catalyst. Mechanistic insight into enantioselective reactions at chiral surfaces is challenging but crucial for understanding catalytic activity differences observed on Pd-1- and Pd-3-terminated PdGa{111} surfaces.
