Tribological behavior of plasma-sprayed Yttria-stabilized zirconia thermal barrier coatings on 316L stainless steel under high-temperature conditions

A. F. Yetim et al.

Summary: The behavior of 316L stainless steel under high temperatures was investigated through plasma spray coating of yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) coatings. The structural and mechanical properties of YSZ films were examined using scanning electron microscopy and Vickers microhardness. Friction and wear properties were determined at temperatures of 500 and 1000 degrees C using a tribotester. Results showed that the surface hardness of YSZ-coated samples significantly improved compared to untreated 316L samples. Both coated and uncoated samples exhibited abrasive wear mechanism, but higher temperatures resulted in smoother wear tracks. Additionally, increased test temperatures caused micro cracks and structural degradation on the surface of untreated stainless steel samples.

Deformation behavior and strengthening effects of an eutectic AlCoCrFeNi2.1 high entropy alloy probed by in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and post-mortem EBSD

Jiajia Shen et al.

Summary: High energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction was utilized to investigate the deformation behavior of an as-cast eutectic AlCoCrFeNi2.1 high entropy alloy during tensile testing. The study determined the volume fractions of different phases and elucidated their roles in the alloy's mechanical response. The findings showed that stress partitioning between the soft disordered FCC and hard ordered B2 BCC phases could modulate the material's deformation behavior. Additionally, analysis of dislocation density and lattice strain demonstrated the preferential deformation of certain lattice planes and the significance of the B2 BCC phase in strengthening the alloy.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of SiC-reinforced Inconel 718 composites fabricated by laser cladding

Jinsheng Ning et al.

Summary: Laser cladding is used to fabricate ceramic-reinforced metal-matrix composite coatings, and the reinforcement content influences the residual stresses and performance of the cladded layer. SiC-reinforced Inconel 718 composites were prepared and investigated in this study. The addition of an appropriate amount of SiC helps relieve residual stresses and improve hardness. Increasing SiC content enhances wear resistance, dominated by abrasive wear, oxidation wear, fatigue wear, and adhesive wear.

Effects of normal load and reciprocating frequency on the tribological behaviors of a Zr-based bulk metallic glass

Longjiang Peng et al.

Summary: This study characterized the tribological behaviors of a Zr-based BMG material against GCr15 steel balls under different loads and frequencies. It was found that high coefficient of friction (COF) was observed under low load and high frequency, while low COF was observed under high loads or at low frequencies. The specific wear rate increased with both load and frequency, with frequency playing a more crucial role. Transition of wear mechanisms from oxidative wear and abrasive wear to adhesive wear was detected with increasing load and frequency, and the role of plastic deformation of BMG was illustrated. This study helps to understand the tribological properties of Zr-based BMGs under sliding conditions.

Effect of SiC content on microstructural evolution and tribology properties of laser-clad TiC-reinforced Ti-Al-Si composite coatings

Jian Li et al.

Summary: This study developed (Ti-Al-Si)-X (x = 1, 2, 3, 4) coatings on TC4 alloy matrix composites using laser cladding, aiming to enhance their surface mechanical properties. The influence of SiC content on the properties and microstructures of the coatings was investigated. The results showed that the reinforced composite coatings contained matrix phases (TiAl, Ti3Al, TiAl3) and reinforcing phases (Ti5Si3 and TiC). With an increase in SiC content, the matrix phases exhibited different trends on the Ti-Al-Si ternary phase diagram due to the introduction of C, a Ti alloy stabilizer. The Ti-Al-Si-3 coating demonstrated the highest microhardness (1092HV(0.3)) and wear resistance (friction coefficient: 0.37, wear scar width: 0.83mm, wear weight loss: 1.8mg), surpassing other reinforced coatings in mechanical properties.

High-temperature oxidation and wear properties of TiC-reinforced CrMnFeCoNi high entropy alloy composite coatings produced by laser cladding

Da Sun et al.

Summary: Extensive research has been conducted on high entropy alloy composite coatings reinforced with micro-sized ceramic particles at room temperature. However, studies on their properties at high temperatures are limited. This study investigated the oxidation and tribological properties of CrMnFeCoNi/xTiC composite coatings produced by laser cladding at a temperature of 600 degrees C. The addition of TiC promoted the oxidation process and the formation of a wear-resistant intermediate layer. The coatings exhibited low hardness, low wear rate, and high coefficient of friction due to the formation of a composite oxide film on the worn surface with good adhesion to the matrix.
