Facile approach to fabricate a high-performance superhydrophobic PS/OTS modified SS mesh for oil-water separation

Rajaram S. Sutar et al.

Summary: Superhydrophobic coatings were successfully fabricated on stainless steel mesh through the dipcoating method, using successive layers of polystyrene (PS) and octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS). The coating displayed a regular pattern of microscale bumps with nanoscale folds, enhancing the overall superhydrophobicity. It exhibited over 97% separation effectiveness for low viscosity oils and 89% efficiency for high viscosity oils. Additionally, the coating showed exceptional mechanical strength, thermal stability, and self-cleaning properties.

Electrospun superparamagnetic fibrous composite nanofiber films for enhanced oil spill recovery: Effect of capping and magnetic nanoparticle loading on oil sorption efficiency

C. Anushree et al.

Summary: This study reports a novel process to fabricate superparamagnetic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) composite nanofiber films for enhanced oil sludge removal. The dispersibility of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in the polymer solution is enhanced through organic coating and inorganic capping using carboxymethyl cellulose and manganese oxide (MnOx), respectively. The addition of MNPs reduces the fiber diameter and increases the sorption capacity for different oils. The prepared composite shows great potential for oil sludge removal with minimal reduction in sorption capacity after regeneration.

Randomly heterogeneous oleophobic/pH-responsive polymer coatings with reversible wettability transition for multifunctional fabrics and controllable oil?water separation

Huanjie Chi et al.

Summary: A coating with pH-switchable wettability transition between superamphiphobic and superhydrophilic-superoleophobic has been achieved through rational design of oleophobic/pH-responsive polymer heterogeneous chemistry. The coated fabric shows repellency to water and oils, quickly transitioning to superhydrophilic-superoleophobic under acidic conditions and can be restored to superamphiphobic under mild alkaline conditions, with the transition being reversible for multiple cycles. The fabric can effectively separate oil-water mixtures and various immiscible organic solvent mixtures, and also offers other functionalities such as hygroscopicity, anti-static properties, oil-repellency, and anti-oil fouling for improved comfort and self-cleaning.
