Low modulus-yet-hard, deformable multicomponent fibrous B2-phase making a medium-entropy alloy ultra-strong and ductile

D. D. Zhang et al.

Summary: Introducing inclusions as a strength enhancer can be effective, but it often leads to cracking and reduced ductility. In this study, a novel strategy was proposed to design ultrastrong and ductile alloys by combining a high modulus-yet-soft matrix with low modulus-yet-hard fibrous inclusions. The image stress effect induced by modulus mismatch promoted dislocation transmission and effectively prevented cracking in the inclusions. This work provides a new pathway for designing high-performance alloys and metallic composites.

Improved corrosion resistance of AISI 321 steel to molten Al-Si alloy by aluminizing and laser shock peening

Wei Li et al.

Summary: The influence of aluminizing and subsequent laser shock peening (LSP) treatment on the corrosion resistance of AISI 321 steel against molten Al-Si alloy was investigated. The results showed that both treatments could lower the corrosion rate of AISI 321 steel. The aluminized layers were oxidized during the heating process of the corrosion test, which significantly decreased the diffusion rate of Al and Si elements. Additionally, the introduction of high density dislocation and residual stress by LSP treatment promoted the rapid growth of thicker and denser oxide film, inhibiting crack formation and favoring stronger bonds between corrosion products.

Summary: This study successfully enhances the yield strength and tensile ductility of CoCrFeNi HEA by laser shock peening (LSP), and significantly increases the surface hardness of the material. Microstructure analysis reveals that grain refinement and a mixed deformation mode of dislocation slip and deformation twin are the main strengthening mechanisms after LSP treatment.

Outstanding high-temperature strength of novel Fe-Cr-Ni-Al-V ferritic alloys with hierarchical B2-NiAl precipitates

Kanghyun Park et al.

Summary: We designed and developed a novel ferritic alloy that exhibits excellent high-temperature yield strength enhancement through coherent hierarchical precipitates. The composition of the alloy was tailored by adding Vanadium to a Fe-Cr-Ni-Al alloy to control the size and volume fractions of coherent B2-NiAl precipitates. Experimental and theoretical approaches were used to examine the evolutions of microstructures, mechanical properties, and strengthening mechanisms at 973 K. It was found that the addition of Vanadium reduces the lattice misfit and precipitate size, and a hierarchical structure within the precipitate plays a vital role in enhancing the yield strength at 973 K.

Hot dip aluminization of 304L SS and P91 ferritic-martensitic steel - Comparison of interface morphology and growth kinetics of reaction zones

T. N. Prasanthi et al.

Summary: Hot dip aluminizing of P91 ferritic/martensitic and AISI 304L austenitic stainless steels in pure aluminum was studied. The evolution of interface morphology, type and distribution of phases, and growth kinetics of the reaction zones were investigated. While similar intermetallic compounds formed in both steels, their distribution, morphology, and growth kinetics differed noticeably. The optimal temperature and time combination to obtain thin, uniform, defect-free surface aluminide layers were found to be 750℃-2 min for P91 F/M steel and 800℃-1 min for 304L steel.

A novel route to improve the fatigue properties of aviation M50 steel via tailoring the bainite content and cold deformation

Feng Wang et al.

Summary: The microstructure, mechanical and fatigue properties of M50 steel were studied by combining austempering processing with cold deformation. The introduction of bainite effectively refined the multiphase microstructure. The finest microstructure and the best combination of strength and toughness were obtained when the bainite content was 10.5%. Cold deformation of 20% led to a slight improvement in tensile strength and impact toughness, but larger cold deformation significantly deteriorated the mechanical properties. The study concludes that mechanical properties can be improved by tailoring the bainite content to approximately 10% and the cold deformation degree to 20%. The tailored specimen exhibited a 114.1% longer specific life of rolling contact fatigue compared to traditional martensitic quenched specimens, indicating improved resistance to fatigue. The findings suggest that strict tailoring of bainite content and cold deformation degree can enhance the fatigue properties of M50 steel.

Strengthening CrFeCoNiMn0.75Cu0.25 high entropy alloy via laser shock peening

Wujing Fu et al.

Summary: The present work demonstrates that laser shock peening (LSP) can significantly improve the mechanical properties of CrFeCoNiMn0.75Cu0.25 high entropy alloy (HEA). LSP-treated HEA samples achieve a yield strength more than two times that of as-cast alloys, attributed to the introduction of a gradient microstructure comprising subgrains, dense dislocations, and nano-twins near the treated surface. The combination of dislocation hardening and mechanical twinning leads to excellent plasticity during tensile loading. The results also indicate the possibility of developing gradient-structured HEAs with excellent mechanical properties using LSP.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of composite strengthened high-chromium cast iron by laser quenching and laser shock peening

Aixin Feng et al.

Summary: The study investigated the microstructure and mechanical properties of composite strengthened high-chromium cast iron by laser quenching and laser shock peening. The results showed that laser shock peening can further promote the transformation of retained austenite into martensite, refine the grains, and uniformly disperse carbides in the high-chromium cast iron specimens. The method of laser quench-laser shock peening eliminated the residual stress difference and converted tensile stress into compressive stress, which increased the dislocation density and improved the micro-hardness. The impact toughness and wear resistance of the high-chromium cast iron were enhanced.

Microstructure evolution and hardness of hot dip aluminized coating on pure iron and EUROFER 97 steel: Effect of substrate chemistry and heat treatment

Kaushal Kishore et al.

Summary: EUROFER 97 steel is a potential material for the first wall of fusion reactor, and aluminide diffusion barrier coatings are effective in mitigating corrosion and tritium permeation issues. The performance of the coating is influenced by the nature of intermetallic phases and their microstructure. The major phase formed during hot dip aluminizing (HDA) process was Fe2Al5, with subsequent heat treatment transforming it into FeAl2, FeAl(Cr) and alpha-Fe(Al, Cr) in HDA EUROFER steel due to interdiffusion of Fe, Al and Cr. No trace of FeAl2 was found in HDA iron.

Kinetics of formation of pack aluminized coating on 9Cr-1Mo steel and interdiffusional behaviour of iron aluminides at intermediate temperatures

Summary: The development of a suitable iron aluminide coating layer on 9Cr-1Mo (P91 grade) steel at or below 750°C has been studied to improve its oxidation and corrosion behavior while retaining the microstructure. A theoretical model was developed to predict the kinetics of aluminide coating growth on P91 steel substrate. Experimental results validated the model, showing that the coating mainly consisted of single Fe2Al5 phase, with additional FeAl2, FeAl, and Fe(Al) layers formed at different temperatures and times. The diffusional growth of the FeAl aluminide layer followed parabolic kinetics, with an activation energy of 237.5 kJ mol-1.
