Thin Shell Model of a Coated Conductor With a Ferromagnetic Substrate

Leonid Prigozhin et al.

Summary: This research presents a simple model to describe the electromagnetic response of coated conductors with magnetic substrates. The model utilizes a quasistatic thin shell approximation and an infinitely thin approximation for the superconducting layer. A dimensionless parameter is used to characterize the magnetic substrate, and a Chebyshev spectral method is derived for numerical solution. The influence of the magnetic substrate on superconducting current and ac losses is investigated.

Impact of Magnet Number on the DC Output of a Dynamo-Type HTS Flux Pump

Pengbo Zhou et al.

Summary: Based on a two-dimensional segregated H-formulation finite-element method model, this study numerically investigates the impact of the number of permanent magnets (PMs) mounted on the rotor on the performance of the high-temperature superconducting flux pump. It is found that the increase in PM number does not always lead to an increase in the dc output voltage (V-DC). Instead, there is a certain threshold value, determined by the size of the PMs and the rotor, above which the dc output voltage begins to decrease continuously. Furthermore, with further increase in PM number, the dc output voltage may disappear and then increase with the opposite polarity. This phenomenon is attributed to the change in the magnetic field profile applied to the HTS stator when increasing the number of PMs, suggesting an optimal value for PM number to achieve the best performance.

Coupling electromagnetic numerical models of HTS coils to electrical circuits: multi-scale and homogeneous methodologies using the T-A formulation

Pengbo Zhou et al.

Summary: Numerical simulation is an effective tool for predicting the electromagnetic behavior of superconductors. A new model based on the finite element method can accurately evaluate the behavior of complex high-temperature superconductor systems and can be applied to large-scale HTS applications. By comparing computation results and efficiency, it is found that the new model can improve computation efficiency without compromising accuracy, which is of great value for designing and optimizing large-scale HTS devices.

Multi-objective optimization for the superconducting bias coil of a saturated iron core fault current limiter using the T-A formulation

G. dos Santos et al.

Summary: In response to the increasing short-circuit levels in transmission and distribution systems, fault current limiters (FCL) have emerged as a potential solution. Studies on the saturated iron core superconducting fault current limiter (SIC-SFCL) topology have shown promising results, with an optimal geometry proposed for the superconducting coil using a multi-objective optimization method. The research also highlights the need for a more detailed study focusing on the optimization of the DC bias superconducting coil of the SIC-SFCL.

Modeling the charging process of a coil by an HTS dynamo-type flux pump

Asef Ghabeli et al.

Summary: The high-T-c superconducting dynamo generates a DC voltage using the nonlinear resistivity of an HTS tape when exposed to a varying magnetic field. Two numerical models were used to examine the process of charging a coil by the dynamo, showing excellent agreement with an analytical method. The models captured the dynamic behavior of the charging process, including current ripples that could cause AC loss in the HTS dynamo.
