Sensitivity analysis and uncertainty quantification of a seismic risk model for road networks

Eduardo Allen et al.

Summary: This study proposes a risk framework to evaluate operational consequences in interurban road networks exposed to seismic hazard using travel time delays and propagate uncertainty in the model. The risk values are evaluated using Monte Carlo simulations, and uncertainty is propagated using a polynomial chaos expansion meta-model. The results demonstrate that the parameters that most significantly influence risk are fragility, loss of road capacity, and traffic volume.

Integrating Vulnerable Road User Safety Criteria into Transportation Asset Management to Prioritize Budget Allocation at the Network Level

Carlos M. Chang et al.

Summary: This paper introduces the VRU-TAM framework, aiming to incorporate the safety of vulnerable road users into infrastructure management decision-making. The framework consists of four phases: assessment, prioritization, scenario analysis, and results. By using a safety-weighted effectiveness ratio (SWER), pedestrian safety factors and costs are taken into consideration. The dynamic bubble up (DBU) technique is employed for budget prioritization. A case study is presented to demonstrate the applicability of the methodology in evaluating different budget-driven scenarios for funding allocation. It is concluded that the method incorporating safety criteria offers a deeper understanding of the effects of budgetary constraints on backlog costs and the remaining life of infrastructure assets.

Summary: This paper proposes the use of a modified network robustness index (MNRI) to minimize total costs during recovery after a natural hazard event. The method selects the repair program from multiple options using incremental benefit cost analysis. A realistic damaged network in Chur, Switzerland is used to test the efficiency and effectiveness of the method. The results show that the approximations obtained using the proposed method are close to the results using a near optimal heuristic algorithm and reduce computational effort and time needed.
