Investigating the Association between Diabetic Neuropathy and Vitamin D in Emirati Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Tahra Al Ali et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the association between vitamin D deficiency and diabetic neuropathy in Emirati patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The results showed that among the 600 patients, 50% had diabetic neuropathy and these patients had lower vitamin D levels compared to those without neuropathy. The study suggests a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in Emirati patients with T2DM and highlights the importance of addressing this issue.

Is diabetic neuropathy associated with vitamin D status? A meta-analysis

Kaissar Yammine et al.

Summary: Multiple studies have investigated the association between vitamin D levels and diabetic neuropathy (DN) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The findings suggest that diabetic patients with DN have significantly lower serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and a higher prevalence of vitamin D deficiency, indicating the potential benefit of vitamin D supplementation for this population.

Vitamin D in the Prevention and Treatment of Diabetic Neuropathy

Zsuzsanna Putz et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the role of vitamin D in diabetic neuropathy and the latest data on its treatment. Studies suggest that vitamin D deficiency is associated with peripheral neuropathy, diabetic foot ulcers, and cardiac autonomic neuropathy in diabetes. Vitamin D supplementation may be an effective adjunctive therapy for neuropathic pain and can potentially slow down the progression of neural damage.

Vitamin D deficiency is associated with painful diabetic neuropathy

Uazman Alam et al.

Summary: The study suggests that vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency are associated with painful diabetic neuropathy, with more severe symptoms in patients with painful neuropathy compared to painless neuropathy. The serum 25(OH)D levels were significantly lower in patients with painful neuropathy compared to those with painless neuropathy and healthy controls.

Systemic inflammatory biomarkers in painful diabetic neuropathy

Panoraia Baka et al.

Summary: The study revealed an association between painful diabetic neuropathy and a specific inflammatory profile, with higher levels of inflammatory mediators in painful neuropathies compared to painless neuropathies. Patients with diabetes mellitus and peripheral neuropathy also showed increased markers of inflammation compared to those without peripheral neuropathy. A proinflammatory state may be a common factor in pain and peripheral neuropathy in patients with diabetes mellitus, although the profiles of inflammation differ.

Severe Vitamin D Deficiency Is Associated With Increased Expression of Inflammatory Cytokines in Painful Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy

Gong Xiaohua et al.

Summary: The study revealed that severe vitamin D deficiency was more common in patients with painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy, and they also had significantly higher levels of IL-6 and TNF-alpha. Severe vitamin D deficiency, IL-6, and TNF-alpha were identified as independent risk factors for painful DPN. Moreover, there were significant negative correlations between vitamin D status and IL-6/TNF-alpha levels.
