Analysis of Single Synthetic Fibers Using a Portable Total Reflection X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer

Yawara Sengoku et al.

Summary: In this study, single synthetic fibers from various textile products were analyzed using a portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. Characteristic elements originating from materials such as catalysts, delustering agents, and dyes used in manufacturing synthetic fibers were detected, with differences observed in the types of characteristic elements among the samples.

An Evaluation of Total Reflection X-Ray Fluorescence as a Tool for Forensic Discrimination of Single Polyester Fibers

Hikari Takahara et al.

Summary: TXRF spectrometry was used to discriminate single polyester fibers in forensic applications, identifying trace metallic elements and establishing correlations between compositions and manufacturers using PCA. Analysis of black polyester fibers from car trunk mats revealed some fibers containing elements characteristic of different polymerization catalysts, suggesting they were made from recycled materials. The spectra obtained from TXRF and SR-mu XRF showed similar patterns for the analyzed fiber samples.

Nondestructive discrimination of red silk single fibers using total reflection X-ray fluorescence spectrometry and synchrotron radiation X-ray fluorescence spectrometry

Hibiki Komatsu et al.

Summary: The study analyzed commercially available red silk samples using TXRF and SR-XRF, with SR-XRF showing stronger discriminating capabilities. Based on the elemental analysis results, a combination of these two methods is proposed as a new nondestructive single fiber identification method for forensic science.
