Molecular pathological recognition of freshly excised human glioma using terahertz ATR spectroscopy

Ning Mu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed glioma tissues using terahertz (THz) attenuated total reflectance (ATR) time-domain spectroscopy and found significant differences in THz parameters between different grades of tumor tissues. The THz absorption coefficient also increased with the increase of THz frequency. It was demonstrated that THz spectroscopy can effectively distinguish between IDH mutant and wild-type glioma tissues, providing a theoretical basis for the development of intraoperative real-time glioma recognition and diagnosis technology.

Early Predictors of Clinical and MRI Outcomes Using LASSO in Multiple Sclerosis

Gauruv Bose et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to identify predictors in common between different clinical and MRI outcomes in multiple sclerosis (MS) by comparing predictive models. The results showed that early prognostication of MS is possible using LASSO modeling to identify a limited set of accessible clinical features. These predictive models can be clinically usable in treatment decision making.

EANO-EURACAN-SNO Guidelines on circumscribed astrocytic gliomas, glioneuronal, and neuronal tumors

Roberta Ruda et al.

Summary: The new WHO 2021 Classification of CNS Tumors includes various rare tumor entities that are more commonly found in children, adolescents, and young adults. The Task Force has reviewed the evidence for diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, drawing recommendations primarily for adult patients. Tumor diagnosis is primarily done using histological techniques, but molecular workup is important for unresolved cases. MRI findings are non-specific but can be characteristic for certain tumors. Gross total resection is the most important treatment for prolonging survival and achieving seizure control. Radiotherapy should be considered for certain grades of tumors. Reoperation and radiotherapy may be useful for recurrent tumors. Targeted therapies can be used in selected patients based on molecular alterations. Sequencing is advocated for diagnostic clarification and guiding targeted therapies.

De novo pyrimidine synthesis is a targetable vulnerability in IDH mutant glioma

Diana D. Shi et al.

Summary: This study found that IDH1-mutant glioma cells are hypersensitive to drugs targeting enzymes in the de novo pyrimidine nucleotide synthesis pathway. They also showed that a brain-penetrant DHODH inhibitor exhibits monotherapy efficacy against IDH-mutant gliomas, based on experiments using a genetically engineered mouse model and patient-derived models.

Calibration-free, high-precision, and robust terahertz ultrafast metasurfaces for monitoring gastric cancers

Jing Lou et al.

Summary: Optical sensors have great potential for biological analysis and early disease diagnosis. However, the current calibration process introduces measurement errors. This study proposes a calibration-free sensor based on optically controlled terahertz metasurface, achieving high-precision biosensing detection and eliminating measurement errors, which can be used for monitoring the cancerous process of gastric cells.

Sensing nitriles with THz spectroscopy of urine vapours from cancers patients subject to chemotherapy

Vladimir Vaks et al.

Summary: This study investigated the dynamics of urine composition in cancer patients treated with chemotherapy using a THz nonstationary high-resolution spectrometer. A comparison was made between the molecular urine composition of healthy volunteers and cancer patients. It was found that certain nitriles appeared or increased in content after chemotherapy, indicating potential biochemical damage to the liver. These nitriles could serve as candidates for further large-scale testing to identify markers for nephrotoxicity of chemotherapy at an early stage when conventional diagnostics fail to detect organ damage. Comparing metabolite concentration dynamics with chemotherapy side effects could help identify patients prone to severe complications and adjust treatment accordingly.

Two-dimensional Dirac plasmon-polaritons in graphene, 3D topological insulator and hybrid systems

Chihun In et al.

Summary: Collective oscillations of massless particles in two-dimensional Dirac materials provide a novel approach for implementing atomically thin devices based on low-energy quasiparticle interactions. Strong confinement of nearfield distribution on the 2D surface is crucial for demonstrating extraordinary optoelectronic functions and shaping the spectral response in the mid-infrared wavelength range. This review summarizes recent works on 2D Dirac plasmon-polariton in graphene and three-dimensional topological insulator (TI), where mid-IR and terahertz radiation experience significant confinement in a deep-subwavelength scale. The findings in graphene and 3D TI reveal intense near-field interaction of 2D Dirac plasmon within highly-compressed volumes, and can potentially be applied in the development of optoelectronic biomolecular sensors, atomically thin photodetectors, and laser-driven light sources.
