Theoretical insights into atomic-electronegativity-regulated ESIPT behavior for B-bph-fla-OH fluorophore

Jinfeng Zhao et al.

Summary: In this work, the excited state behaviors of B-bph-fla-OH were explored, inspired by its potential applications for detecting cysteine and its novel photoCORM property. By decoding photo-induced hydrogen bonding interactions and exploring atomic-electronegativity-dependent excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) behavior, we revealed the significance of atomic electronegativity in photochemical reactions. We presented the atomic-electronegativity-regulated ESIPT mechanism and spectral behaviors, shedding light on the design and development of novel fluorescent sensors based on B-bph-fla-OH derivatives in the future.

Effects of solvent polarity on the novel excited-state intramolecular thiol proton transfer and photophysical property compared with the oxygen proton transfer

Lujia Yang et al.

Summary: The dual-fluorescent phenomena of excited state intramolecular thiol proton transfer (ESIPT) for 3-thiolflavone derivative (3NTF) were reported for the first time, opening a new chapter in the field of ESIPT. The study investigated the proton transfer processes of 3NTF in different solvents and found that solvent polarities inhibited the enhancement of the hydrogen bond of the excited state, which was not conducive to ESIPT. The research also revealed that the unusually large Stokes shift fluorescence of 3NTF was mainly caused by the coupling of ESIPT and twisting intramolecular charge transfer (TICT).

Unraveling photo-induced proton transfer mechanism and proposing solvent regulation manner for the two intramolecular proton-transfer-site BH-BA fluorophore

Jinfeng Zhao et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the specific excited state processes of BH-BA fluorophore, including the exploration of photo-induced hydrogen bonding geometrical changes, excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESISPT) mechanism, and solvent polarity regulation. The results show that the hydrogen bonding strength in the S-1 state, particularly O-4-H-5···N-6, facilitates the ESIPT behavior. Photo-induced intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and variations of charges related to hydrogen bonding moieties contribute to the ESIPT tendency. The ESISPT mechanism of BH-BA occurs along the O-4-H-5···N-6 hydrogen bonding wire and can be adjusted by surrounding solvent polarity.

Effect of solvent polarity on excited-state double proton transfer process of 1,5-dihydroxyanthraquinone†

Zheng-Ran Wang et al.

Summary: The influence of solvent polarity on the excited-state double proton transfer (ES-DPT) process of 1,5-dihydroxyanthraquinone (1,5-DHAQ) was investigated. The results showed that solvent polarity affects the position of ESDPT fluorescence emission peak and accelerates the rate of excited state dynamics. The increase of solvent polarity decreases the ESDPT barrier.

Exploring the effect of nitrile substituent position on fluorescence quantum yield of ESIPT-based oxazoline derivatives: A TDDFT investigation

Qi Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the mechanism behind the difference in quantum yields between 2-(4,4-Dimethyl-4,5-dihydrooxazol-2-yl)-3-hydroxybenzonitrile (1-CN) and 4-(4,4-Dimethyl-4,5-dihydrooxazol-2-yl)-3-hydroxybenzonitrile (3-CN) was explored. The calculation results showed that the fluorescence peaks of both molecules originated from keto* configuration. The comparison of emission oscillator strength suggested that neither radiative transition nor internal conversion process was the main reason for the difference in quantum yields. It was found that the intersystem crossing process was more prominent in 1-CN compared to 3-CN, providing direct evidence for the lower fluorescence quantum yield of 1-CN.

Summary: Organic molecules with excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) properties are ideal candidates for efficient organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). In this study, the ESIPT and TADF mechanisms of the compound BP(OH)(2) were investigated in detail, revealing that it undergoes a barrierless single ESIPT process and that the T-3 state plays a predominant role in TADF.

Decoding Solvent Polarity Related Excited State Behaviors for the Novel Amino NH-type 3TfAPI Fluorophore

Jinfeng Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the solvent polarity dependent excited state behaviors of amino NH-type N-cyclohexylphthalimide-substituted trifluoroacetylamino (3TfAPI). Our findings suggest that the hydrogen bond N-H...O is enhanced in the S-1 state, especially in polar solvents. We also discovered that photo-induced intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) plays a critical role in facilitating the ESIPT tendency for 3TfAPI. By constructing potential energy curves (PEC5), we clarified the detailed ESIPT mechanism for 3TfAPI and demonstrated solvent polarity regulated ESIPT behavior.

We investigated the coexistence of three conformations and the hydrogen bonding strengthening phenomenon between BI3HC-A and BI3HC-C. We found that solvent polarity regulated the excited-state intramolecular proton-transfer (ESIPT) behavior through spectral variations and barrier comparisons.

Summary: The fluorescence tuning mechanisms of fluorescein derivatives involve a dark n pi* state and minimal energy conical intersection (MECI). MECI formation includes significant rotation of the benzene ring and flip-flop motion of the xanthene moiety, which are restricted by intermolecular hydrogen bonding and lower temperature.
