Two simple but effective turn-on benzothiazole-based fluorescent probes for detecting hydrogen sulfide in real water samples and HeLa cells

Tian-Zhen Liu et al.

Summary: Two simple turn-on fluorescent probes, containing a benzothiazole and the 2,4-dinitrobenzenesulfonyl group, were designed for detecting H2S with good selectivity and high sensitivity. Probe P2, with a positive charge, showed better solubility in water and was successfully used to detect endogenous and exogenous H2S in lysosomes of living HeLa cells.

The regulatory role of MiR-203 in oxidative stress induced cell injury through the CBS/H2S pathway

Qiuyan Zhang et al.

Summary: Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) plays a role in oxidative stress induced hypoxia by regulating CBS expression through miR-203. miR-203 can protect cells from injury by regulating lipid peroxidation, cell apoptosis, and mitochondrial membrane potential. Overexpression of miR-203 may exacerbate cell injury, while inhibition of miR-203 can provide protection against cell injury induced by oxidative stress.

EndMT: Potential Target of H2S against Atherosclerosis

Hui-Ting Liu et al.

Summary: Atherosclerosis is a chronic arterial wall disease characterized by plaque formation, endothelial dysfunction, and various factors like cell adhesion and EndMT promoting its progression. Protecting the vascular endothelium from injury is crucial in preventing atherosclerosis. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) shows potential in cardiovascular protection, with its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and cell adhesion enhancement properties potentially offering a target for reversing atherosclerosis.

Rhodanese Rdl2 produces reactive sulfur species to protect mitochondria from reactive oxygen species

Qingda Wang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that rhodanese 2 is the main enzyme responsible for generating reactive sulfur species in yeast mitochondria. Deletion of Rdl2 leads to morphological changes, dysfunction, and DNA degradation of mitochondria, while the generated reactive sulfur species can protect DNA from hydroxyl radical attack.

Regulation of redox signaling by reactive sulfur species

Shingo Kasamatsu et al.

Summary: Reactive sulfur species, such as cysteine persulfide, are common biomolecules produced endogenously in cells. They exhibit unique chemical properties and play roles in various biological processes, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory responses, and regulation of mitochondrial energy metabolism.
