The traditional use of southern African medicinal plants to treat oral pathogens, and studies into their relevant antimicrobial properties

Summary: Oral infections and dental disorders affect around four billion people globally each year, with a high percentage in southern Africa relying on traditional medicines for treatment. This study critically reviews the ethnobotanical use of plant-based traditional medicines in southern Africa to treat oral infections and highlights areas requiring further research. A total of 149 plant species were identified for treating oral pathogens, mainly using roots and leaves as mouthwashes or for direct application. However, the effects of southern African plants against oral pathogens have been poorly explored, with limited screening against a diverse range of pathogens. A research impetus in this field is crucial for overall health and well-being.

Medicinal Uses of the Fabaceae Family in Zimbabwe: A Review

Summary: The current study provides a systematic review of the ethnomedicinal, phytochemical and pharmacological properties of Fabaceae species used as traditional medicines in Zimbabwe. Out of the approximately 665 species of Fabaceae in Zimbabwe, 101 are used for medicinal purposes. These plants are mainly used by communities in peri-urban, rural, and marginalized areas with limited access to healthcare facilities. The study highlights the importance of further research on the therapeutic potential of Fabaceae through toxicological studies, biochemical assays, and pharmacokinetic studies.

Wandering through southwestern Nigeria: An inventory of Yoruba useful angiosperm plants

Summary: This paper compiles the known uses of angiosperm plants by the Yoruba people in southwestern Nigeria and provides baseline ethnobotanical data. The Fabaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Malvaceae, and Asteraceae families are the most commonly used families. The identified plant species are mainly used for medicinal purposes, food and beverages, and other uses.

An ethnobotanical survey of the medicinal plants used in the treatment of cancer in some parts of Matebeleland, Zimbabwe

Summary: The study documents the use of medicinal plants for cancer treatment in parts of Matebeleland, Zimbabwe. A total of 16 medicinal plants were identified, distributed among different plant families with Lamiaceae and Solanaceae being the most dominant. The study found that stem bark was the most commonly used plant part, and Datura stramonium L. had the highest RFC value.

Application of Ethnobotanical Indices in the Utilization of Five Medicinal Herbaceous Plant Species in Benin, West Africa

Summary: This study investigated the ethnobotanical utilization and medicinal value of five neglected herbaceous species in Southern Benin. The results showed that these plants were highly valued in the local markets, especially Argemone mexicana. Each plant had different uses and applications, and the majority of traders did not cultivate these plants. The study suggested better management and preservation of these plants.

Investigation of Potential In Vitro Anticancer and Antimicrobial Activities of Balanites aegyptiaca (L.) Delile Fruit Extract and Its Phytochemical Components

Summary: This study characterized the phytochemical composition of Balanites aegyptiaca fruit extract and evaluated its antimicrobial and cytotoxic activities. The extract showed significant cytotoxic activity against three cancer cell lines and exhibited antimicrobial activity against selected bacterial strains. These findings suggest the potential of Balanites aegyptiaca as an effective treatment for cancer and bacterial infections.
