The optimized organic inputs resulted in significant improvements in tea yield, quality, and soil fertility. The authors recommended the use of optimized organic inputs for sustained tea production and improved soil sustenance.

PBAT/PLA humic acid biodegradable film applied on solar greenhouse tomato plants increased lycopene and decreased total acid contents

Summary: This study aimed to address residual film pollution in farmland and improve tomato quality. PBAT/PLA lignin (MZS) and PBAT/PLA humic acid (FZS) composite biodegradable films were analyzed for their mechanical properties and degradation. The results showed that the FZS film had a higher degradation degree than the MZS film. Covering the soil with FZS film significantly increased electric conductivity and organic matter content, as well as the relative abundance of Chaetomium fungi. Tomato plants covered with FZS film had higher yield, soluble solids, vitamin C (Vc), soluble sugar, and lycopene, and lower total acid and hardness compared to those covered with PE film.

The results showed that ethylene treatment enhanced the breakdown of chlorophyll and accumulation of lycopene and carotenoid contents. The heirloom type of tomatoes exhibited the highest antioxidant activity after cold storage and shelf life.

Summary: This study evaluated the physicochemical parameters, functional properties, and sensory characteristics of five traditional tomato varieties at different ripening stages. The traditional varieties showed higher levels of lycopene and vitamin C compared to the commercial hybrid. Among the traditional varieties, one particular variety stood out for its high levels of total soluble solids, vitamin C, and total antioxidant activity. These traditional varieties can be a viable alternative to satisfy consumer demand for organic produce.

Functional Quality of Improved Tomato Genotypes Grown in Open Field and in Plastic Tunnel under Organic Farming

Summary: This study aimed to promote healthy and balanced lifestyle through increased sustainable production and consumption of fruits and vegetables, comparing the effects of field vs. plastic tunnel growing systems on organic improved tomato genotypes. Results showed higher values of ascorbic acid in field-cultivated tomatoes, while beta-carotene and lycopene content were higher in genotypes grown under plastic tunnel conditions. Significant statistical differences were observed in most parameters between cultivation conditions, highlighting the importance of selecting genotypes that respond positively to organic cultivation in terms of antioxidant compounds.
