Suppression of Pepper Root Rot and Wilt Diseases Caused by Rhizoctonia solani and Fusarium oxysporum

Mohamed Kamal El-Kazzaz et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the potential of beneficial rhizosphere microorganisms in controlling root rot and wilt diseases in pepper plants. Two isolates, Paenibacillus polymyxa and Trichoderma longibrachiatum, were found to significantly reduce the growth of pathogens in vitro. The use of growth-promoting fungi, P. polymyxa, or T. longibrachiatum resulted in reduced incidence and severity of diseases in pepper plants compared to the control. The expression of defense-related gene CaPR4 was higher in treated plants, indicating systemic resistance to pathogen infections.

Vanadium Toxicity Induced Changes in Growth, Antioxidant Profiling, and Vanadium Uptake in Pepper (Capsicum annum L.) Seedlings

Muhammad Ahsan Altaf et al.

Summary: Heavy metal contamination, mainly caused by anthropogenic activities, is a serious environmental and agricultural soil issue. This study investigated the effects of different concentrations of vanadium (V) on pepper seedlings, including growth, root traits, photosynthetic performance, reactive oxygen species (ROS), osmolytes production, antioxidant enzyme activities, and V uptake. The results showed that lower V concentrations positively affected pepper growth, while higher concentrations had a detrimental effect on physiological and biochemical mechanisms.

Role of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles in Countering Negative Effects Generated by Cadmium in Lycopersicon esculentum

Mohammad Faizan et al.

Summary: Nanotechnology, specifically the use of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs), has shown promising results in reducing cadmium (Cd) toxicity in tomato plants by enhancing growth, photosynthesis, antioxidant system, and protein content. The upregulation of antioxidative enzymes by ZnO-NPs helps protect plants from oxidative stress induced by Cd, ultimately leading to improved plant growth and physiological parameters. This study suggests that ZnO-NPs can be a beneficial tool in mitigating heavy metal toxicity in plants.

The effect of EDTA and citric acid on biochemical processes and changes in phenolic compounds profile of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L.) under mercury stress

Saba Mohammadi et al.

Summary: The present study explored the effects of synthetic chelator EDTA and natural chelator citric acid (CA) on physiological and biochemical changes in okra plants exposed to mercury stress. The results showed that higher concentrations of HgCl2 led to increased cell death, Hg accumulation, antioxidant activity, and phenolic compounds in the plants. The study suggests that okra plants could be used for phytoremediation of mercury-contaminated soil and water, with EDTA and CA playing a significant role in removing the toxic metal.

Arsenic behavior in soil-plant system and its detoxification mechanisms in plants: A review

Imran Khan et al.

Summary: Arsenic is a highly toxic and cancer-causing metal that enters the food chain through contaminated water or food, leading to harm to living organisms. The reduction of arsenic content in food is crucial for a healthy life. Understanding the mechanisms of arsenic uptake and transportation in plants, as well as the role of soil factors and plant cell transporters, is essential for developing strategies to restrict arsenic entry into plant cells and ensure safe food production with high crop yields.

5-Methoxyindole, a Chemical Homolog of Melatonin, Adversely Affects the Phytopathogenic Fungus Fusarium graminearum

Mengmeng Kong et al.

Summary: 5-methoxyindole, a cost-effective homolog of melatonin, exhibits strong antifungal activity against F. graminearum by inhibiting its growth, conidia germination, and inducing cell death. The mechanism involves malformation, ROS accumulation, and downregulation of genes related to scavenging reactive oxygen species in F. graminearum. This study presents 5-methoxyindole as a potential compound for protecting wheat plants from F. graminearum infection.
