Molecularly Engineered Low-Cost Organic Hole-Transporting Materials for Perovskite Solar Cells: The Substituent Effect on Non-fused Three-Dimensional Systems

Desire Molina et al.

Summary: This study investigates a new class of non-fused 3D asymmetric compounds as low-cost organic hole-transporting materials for perovskite solar cells. The research analyzes the influence of methylthio and methoxy group substitutions on the fluorene moiety, as well as the position of methoxy groups in the aromatic rings of triphenylamine pending groups. Experimental results demonstrate that the position of the methoxy group in the triphenylamine pending group significantly affects the thermal properties, electronic bandgap, hydrophobicity, film formation, and thermal stress stability. The presence of methylthio or methoxyl substituents in the fluorene moiety mainly affects the electrochemical properties, hole mobility, and morphology of the hole-transporting layer. PSCs with methoxy groups in the fluorene moieties achieved high sunlight-to-electricity power conversion efficiencies, and compound 1-based PSCs exhibited better stability than other materials and the standard HTM-spiro-OMeTAD-based devices. Overall, this research is rated 8.5 out of 10.

Bifunctional spiro-fluorene/heterocycle cored hole-transporting materials: Role of the heteroatom on the photovoltaic performance of perovskite solar cells

Bo Xu et al.

Summary: Hole-transporting materials (HTMs) are crucial for perovskite solar cells (PSCs) as they protect the perovskite layer, promote charge extraction, and control costs. This study focuses on the development of multifunctional HTMs to reduce costs and simplify the preparation process of PSCs. Two novel spiro-fluorene/heterocycle cored bifunctional HTMs, SFHc-O and SFHc-S, were designed and synthesized. The sulfur atoms in SFHc-S were found to have a positive impact on hole extraction/transport and defect passivation, resulting in high efficiency and stability of the corresponding PSCs.

Effects of Heteroatom and Extending the Conjugation on Linear Hole-Transporting Materials for Perovskite Solar Cells

Ying Wang et al.

Summary: Investigation of high-performance molecular hole-transporting materials (HTMs) is important for improving perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this study, four thiophene-arylamine linear HTMs with different pi-bridges were designed and prepared. The effects of heteroatoms and extending conjugation by double bonds on molecular properties and PSC performance were investigated. Molecules with double bonds showed better planarity and more efficient charge transfer, resulting in higher hole mobility and extraction ability. Moreover, molecules with oxygen-based bridges exhibited more planar structures and achieved higher efficiency and stability in PSCs.

Heteroatom effect on linear-shaped dopant-free hole transporting materials for perovskite solar cells

Zi'an Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of linear-shaped D-pi-D and D-A-D hole transporting materials with different heteroatom-containing bridges were designed and implemented in perovskite solar cells. The results showed that the photoelectric conversion efficiency of the devices decreased gradually with increasing atomic numbers, but molecules containing selenium exhibited the best hole extraction ability. The relatively low conductivity of selenium-based HTMs may limit the device performance due to increased dihedral angles between the bridge and the adjacent triphenylamine side arms.
