Addressing separation and edge passivation challenges for high efficiency shingle heterojunction solar cells

Benoit Martel et al.

Summary: We report the fabrication of high-efficiency Silicon heterojunction shingle solar cells with minimal performance losses related to cell separation. A novel separation process was developed, which utilized a rotated silicon brick and wafer fabrication to align the cleavage plan with the solar cells bus bars. Surface passivation technologies using aluminum oxide layers were also optimized for compatibility with low temperature constraints. By applying these techniques, we were able to recover up to 80% of the initial efficiency loss due to separation, significantly reducing overall efficiency losses to less than 0.2% absolute.

A novel laser scribing method combined with the thermal stress cleaving for the crystalline silicon solar cell separation in mass production

Han Han et al.

Summary: In this study, a systematic investigation on the separation processes of crystalline silicon solar cells was conducted. A new laser scribing process with smaller groove width-to-depth ratio and narrower heat affected area was developed. The minimum required scribing depths for separating different crystalline silicon cells were explored using the thermal stress cleaving process. The analysis showed that combining the new scribing method with thermal stress cleaving is a cost-effective separation solution with less laser scribing loss and better compatibility for different cells.

Influence of cell edges on the performance of silicon heterojunction solar cells

V Giglia et al.

Summary: This study highlights the significant recombination activity at the edges of silicon heterojunction solar cells and suggests that mitigating this recombination can lead to higher cell efficiencies. The research provides guidelines for reducing performance losses at the full-size and cut-cell scale, including minimizing the TCO-free region and adjusting the c-Si bulk resistivity.

Influence of laser condition on the electrical and mechanical performance of bifacial half-cutting PERC solar cell and module

Caixia Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a new laser cutting process, thermal laser separation (TLS) cutting technology, and investigates its influence on the mechanical and electrical characteristics of bifacial p-type passivated emitter and rear (PERC) solar cells and modules. The results show that the TLS cutting process can reduce damage and achieve higher power and stronger bending strength.

Post-Separation Processing for Silicon Heterojunction Half Solar Cells With Passivated Edges

Anna Munzer et al.

Summary: The study explores different postseparation processes for silicon heterojunction (SHJ) half solar cells, finding that combining Al2O3 deposition and subsequent light soaking can significantly improve efficiency. The light soaking process enhances surface passivation and carrier transport for SHJ half cells, leading to efficiencies comparable to full cells. This two-step process eliminates the need for additional thermal annealing of the Al2O3 layer and demonstrates the possibility of compensating separation losses, showing potential for improved efficiency at the module level.
