Arsenic-Doped CdSeTe Solar Cells Achieve World Record 22.3% Efficiency

R. Mallick et al.

Summary: For over 30 years, copper has played a critical role in doping CdSeTe solar cells, forming effective contacts, and maximizing efficiency. However, the instability, limited carrier concentration, and efficiency improvements caused by copper defect chemistry have been a drawback. This article demonstrates a world record efficiency of 22.3% without the use of copper by implementing arsenic doping, which also enhances stability, temperature coefficient, and energy yield. The continued improvements in open-circuit voltage have driven the Group V technology to surpass copper. With a certified record cell achieving an open-circuit voltage of 899 mV and high photocurrent values of 31.4 mA/cm(2), a near-term path to 23% efficiency can be achieved by coupling an 80% fill factor with top open-circuit voltage values of 917 mV. Characterization indicates that reducing recombination and improving activation offer viable paths to achieve 25% efficiency.

Suppression of pinhole defects in thin film CdS/CdTe solar cell via gelatin-based negative photoresist passivation

Hongjiang Liu et al.

Summary: This study utilized Gel-NP to fill the pinhole defects in CdTe thin film, which increased the shunt resistance and improved the power conversion efficiency of the solar cell. The passivation of Gel-NP resulted in the formation of enriched CuTe, which transformed into CuxTe after annealing.

Understanding the Copassivation Effect of Cl and Se for CdTe Grain Boundaries

Akash Shah et al.

Summary: The use of chlorine passivation and selenium alloying improves the performance of CdTe solar cells by assisting electron-hole carrier separation, passivating critical acceptor defects, and inducing n-type inversion at the grain boundaries. Defect state analysis provides an explanation for band-bending effects observed in energy band alignment results, elucidating mechanisms for high efficiencies in Se-alloyed and Cl-passivated CdTe solar cells.
