Potential of solar thermochemical water-splitting cycles: A review

Vishnu Kumar Budama et al.

Summary: This article discusses the various routes available for hydrogen fuel production, with a focus on solar thermochemical cycles for water splitting. Solar thermochemical cycles have the potential to be a commercial-scale process for producing green hydrogen and CO in the future. However, there are challenges related to components and sub-processes that need to be addressed in order to make this technology technically and economically feasible. Specific technological aspects, such as particle heating methods and suitable redox materials, as well as the importance of heat recovery, are analyzed in detail as they significantly impact the overall efficiency and economics of the process. Current progress suggests that an efficient thermochemical cycle could be realized within the next few years if these limitations are overcome.

Oxygen separation via chemical looping of the perovskite oxide Sr0.8Ca0.2FeO3 in packed bed reactors for the production of nitrogen from air

S. Capstick et al.

Summary: A redox chemical looping process using a non-stoichiometric perovskite oxide Sr0.8Ca0.2FeO3-δ was investigated as an add-on deoxygenation unit for the production of high-purity nitrogen from air. The material exhibited fast kinetics and a greater oxygen capacity compared to state-of-the-art SrFeO3. Experimental testing and modeling were conducted to validate the performance and scalability of the technology, showing good performance and lower energy demand compared to existing nitrogen production technologies. This technology has the potential to significantly expand the usable oxygen impurity range for nitrogen production using pressure swing adsorption systems.

Sorbent-based oxygen separation with YBC114 for energy storage systems

Mai Xu et al.

Summary: In this work, an oxygen separation system based on an oxygen-selective sorbent, YBaCo4O7+delta (YBC114), was designed, built, and evaluated. The system can provide an inert sweep gas with low oxygen partial pressure for various applications. The study comprehensively investigated the oxygen separation performance of YBC114 and determined its optimal sorption and desorption temperatures. Despite some challenges, the study demonstrates the potential of using the oxygen-selective sorbent for inert gas production and guides the development of new sorbent materials to make this application economically feasible.

Towards chemical equilibrium in thermochemical water splitting. Part 1: Thermal reduction

Alberto de la Calle et al.

Summary: The efficiency of many processes depends on their thermodynamic reversibility, which means operating near equilibrium. In certain thermochemical cycles, approaching equilibrium is possible only at a specific temperature for the reaction step, and the temperature profile also depends on the gas and solid flow ratio.

Kelvin Randhir et al.

Summary: This work presents a unique thermochemical process for charging magnesium-manganese-oxide-based solid-state rechargeable redox fuel. The high-temperature heating of the system can be driven by renewable electricity or concentrated solar power. The main focus of this work is achieving solid flowability at high temperatures and extracting chemically charged solid at ambient temperature with minimal energy loss. The operation strategies described in this work have achieved high system and thermal-to-chemical efficiency, which are the highest reported to date for thermochemical fuels.
