SANISAND-MSf: a sand plasticity model with memory surface and semifluidised state

Ming Yang et al.

Summary: The new constitutive model for sand incorporates two new ingredients for controlling plastic strains and pore pressure development, as well as simulating large shear strain development in the post-liquefaction stage. With a single set of constants, this model successfully simulates undrained cyclic tests with different stress ratios, contributing to potential applications in seismic site response analysis.

Investigation of key parameters and issues in simulating centrifuge model tests of a sheet-pile wall retaining a liquefiable soil deposit

Devdeep Basu et al.

Summary: This study conducts numerical simulations of centrifuge experiments on a sheet-pile wall with a liquefiable backfill and compares the results with experimental data to evaluate the accuracy of numerical tools in predicting the seismic performance of this geosystem. The influence of factors such as relative density, soil permeability, and numerical model construction method on the system's response is investigated. The findings suggest that considering both mass-based and CPT-based DR estimates leads to a better prediction of the range of sheet-pile wall displacements.

Liquefaction of granular materials in constant-volume cyclic shearing: Transition between solid-like and fluid-like states

Ming Yang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the evolution of internal structure during cyclic liquefaction of dense granular media through 3D-DEM simulations. The study reveals a fast transition to a fluid-like shear strain regime upon liquefaction, characterized by low shear modulus, decreasing dilatancy, and reduced shear viscosity. Various micro- and meso-scale descriptors are used to analyze the internal structure, and two possible criteria for exiting the fluid-like state based on excess pore pressure are discussed.

Summary: This study utilized laboratory and centrifuge tests to investigate the behavior of a sand slope subjected to base excitation through dynamic coupled analysis. By using a novel constitutive ingredient to model post-liquefaction large cyclic shear strains, the calibrated model showed improved performance compared to a reference model. The study revealed the capabilities and limitations of the models in simulating soil liquefaction strength and its post-liquefaction response.

Effect of nearby ground structures on the seismic response of underground structures in saturated sand

Tong Zhu et al.

Summary: This study uses three-dimensional high-fidelity numerical dynamic analysis to investigate the seismic response of underground structures in saturated sand, showing that nearby ground structures significantly influence the seismic response of underground structures. Different ground structure positions can amplify internal forces, deformation, and rotation of the underground structures. Factors such as relative structure positions, ground structure characteristics, and ground motion properties play a role in determining the effects of ground structures on underground structures' seismic response.
