Prediction of secant shear modulus and damping ratio for an extremely dilative silica sand based on machine learning techniques

Abolfazl Baghbani et al.

Summary: A better understanding of soil response to dynamic loads can lead to safer designs and reduce casualties. Artificial neural networks (ANN) and classification and regression random forests (CRRF) were used as alternative estimators to predict sand secant shear modulus and damping ratio. The Bayesian Regularization (BR) back-propagation ANN model produced high correlation coefficient (R) and low mean absolute error (MAE) values, indicating its accuracy in predicting these dynamic parameters. The sensitivity analysis showed that vertical stress and relative density were vital in predicting damping ratio, while all three input variables were important in predicting secant shear modulus. Comparing with existing literature models, the ANN and CRRF models showed greater accuracy and robustness in predicting shear modulus and damping ratio.

Characteristics of dynamic shear modulus and damping ratio and the structural formula of EPS particles lightweight soil

Tian -shun Hou et al.

Summary: This study conducted dynamic triaxial tests on lightweight soil with expanded polystyrene (EPS) particles to investigate its dynamic characteristics under traffic load. The effects of mixed ratios, confining pressure, and frequency on the backbone curves, dynamic shear modulus, and damping ratio of the soil were examined. Formulas for the maximum dynamic shear modulus and maximum damping ratio of the lightweight soil were established. The results showed that the backbone curves exhibited nonlinear and strain-hardening characteristics, while the dynamic shear modulus curves appeared as inverse S-shaped. The damping ratio curves were Bell-shaped and S-shaped, depending on the confining pressure and compressive yield stress.

Seismic isolation effect of rubber-sand mixture cushion under different site classes based on a simplified analysis model

Mengtao Wu et al.

Summary: The use of rubber-sand mixture (RSM) cushion in geotechnical seismic isolation (GSI) systems is an emerging technique for protecting buildings in earthquake-prone areas. The isolation effect of the RSM cushion is affected by site classification, with harder sites having better isolation effect. Factors such as the cushion thickness, base pressure, and seismic excitation intensity also influence the isolation effect. The study provides important insights for the low-cost seismic design of residential houses in developing countries.

Summary: This paper compares the dynamic response of two models to investigate the effectiveness of lateral disconnection of foundations from the surrounding soil in reducing seismic vulnerability. The experimental results show that the lateral disconnection significantly reduces the foundation stiffness, leading to a larger predominant period of the structure and a reduction in floor accelerations.

Cyclic loading test for RC bridge piers strengthened with UHPC jackets in the corrosive environment

Wenting Yuan et al.

Summary: This study conducted quasi-static cyclic experiments on four piers locally strengthened with UHPC jackets to analyze the influence of corrosion level and height of UHPC jacket on various mechanical properties. The results showed that the corrosion level in the UHPC zone was smaller than that in the normal strength concrete zone. Furthermore, a smaller height of UHPC jackets resulted in more significant degradation of stiffness and strength and weaker energy dissipation capability for the pier.
