Hybrid multi-mode magneto-mechano-electric generator with enhanced magnetic field energy harvesting performance

Miaomiao Cheng et al.

Summary: Magneto-mechano-electric (MME) generator converts magnetic energy into electrical energy via mechanical strain/stress mediated magnetoelectric coupling effect. In this work, a hybrid multi-mode MME device is proposed with broadened bandwidth and enhanced energy harvesting performance by developing the constitutive equation of MME structure. The designed hybrid generator includes three power generation units: piezoelectric energy harvesting (PEH) unit, electromagnetic energy harvesting (EEH) unit, and magnetostrictive energy harvesting (MEH) unit. Moreover, the corresponding energy harvesting management circuit is designed for these units to achieve the maximum harvest of magnetic field energy. At the magnetic field of 5.57 Oe, the maximum output power of the three generating units are 0.71 mW (PEH), 1.694 mW (EEH), and 0.27 mW (MEH), respectively. The proposed hybrid generator can provide a stable power for temperature and humidity sensors integrated with Bluetooth wireless communication technology by harvesting stray magnetic field energy, and has the potential to power wireless sensors.

Power optimization of a magnetoelectric wireless power transfer system with volume constraint

Binh Duc Truong

Summary: This paper presents a general framework for maximizing power transmission to a load resistance in a magnetoelectric wireless power transfer system, considering volume constraints. The authors derive an analytical solution to the power optimization problem under different conditions and investigate the relationships between output power and operating frequency. The roles of magneto-elastic transduction factor and resonator figure of merit are discussed, and examples with specific system parameters are provided to validate the theoretical analysis.

Miah A. Halim et al.

Summary: This article presents the characterization and a validated electromechanical model of a dual-transduction receiver for electrodynamic wireless power transfer system. The receiver utilizes both piezoelectric and electrodynamic transducers to generate electrical power at a specific frequency. An equivalent electrical circuit model is used to analyze the system behavior under low-frequency magnetic fields. Experimental results confirm the accuracy of the model. This design can be applied to wirelessly charge wearable and implantable medical devices.

David Gibus et al.

Summary: In this study, we provide guidelines for designing vibration energy harvesters with strong electromechanical coupling coefficients and present a broadband harvester with high normalized power density. Through an analytical model, we explain how to maximize the coupling coefficient and quality factor of a cantilever to optimize its performance. The proposed prototype exhibits one of the best coupling coefficients and a high quality factor, achieving high performance with an appropriate tunable electrical interface.

Frequency-dependence of power and efficiency for resonant inductive coupling and magnetoelectric wireless power transfer systems

Erik Andersen et al.

Summary: The study investigates the frequency dependence of the maximum output power and efficiency of two wireless power transfer systems, resonant inductive coupling (RIC) and magnetoelectric (ME). The results show that in the weak-coupling regime, the power optimization and efficiency maximization problems are equivalent and yield the same optimal load and frequency, with both topologies exhibiting similar properties.
