Omniphobic liquid-like surfaces

Liwei Chen et al.

Summary: Liquid-repellent surfaces, such as solid surfaces with flexible polymer brushes or alkyl monolayers, have unique liquid-like properties and can repel various liquids. They offer an alternative to superhydrophobic or superoleophobic surfaces and lubricated slippery surfaces. The liquid-like nature of these surfaces also has important implications for interface properties and applications. Gastrointestinal-Peristalsis-Inspired Hydrogel Actuators for NIR-Controlled Transport of Viscous Liquids

Liyun Zhang et al.

Summary: Inspired by gastrointestinal peristalsis, researchers have designed and constructed double-layered tubular hydrogel actuators for the directional transport of highly viscous liquids. The actuators can transport liquids with viscosities ranging from approximately 1000 mPa s to >80000 mPa s under the control of an 808 nm laser. This work expands the research scope of liquid transportation and has potential applications in viscous-liquid-based microfluidics, artificial blood vessels, and soft robots.

Achieving Extreme Pressure Resistance to Liquids on a Super-Omniphobic Surface with Armored Reentrants

Pengcheng Sun et al.

Summary: Static repellency and pressure resistance are essential for high-performance super-omniphobic surfaces. However, these two properties are usually mutually exclusive. Inspired by the Springtail, researchers have developed a surface with micrometric and nanometric reentrant structures that can simultaneously provide static liquid repellency and pressure resistance. This design avoids the structural conflicts and achieves the highest-pressure resistance ever reported.

Achieving ultralong directional liquid transportation spontaneously with a high velocity

Qiankai Liu et al.

Summary: The passive surface is considered an ideal platform for liquid transportation due to no external energy input. However, achieving long-range and high-speed liquid transport on such surface is challenging. By proposing a cellular design of wettability pattern, we have overcome these limitations and achieved the longest reported distance of water droplet transport with high velocity. Our cellular design has potential applications in materials science, interfacial chemistry, and biomedical research.

Continuous, autonomous subsurface cargo shuttling by nature-inspired meniscus-climbing systems

Ganhua Xie et al.

Summary: Water-walking insects use capillary forces to climb or descend the meniscus between water surface and a solid object by changing body posture, which inspired the development of autonomous aquatic synthetic systems that can shuttle cargo underground between landing and drop-off sites. By controlling the contact angle of a coacervate sac or hydrogel droplet, cyclic cargo shuttling can occur continuously as long as reactants from the surrounding aqueous phase are not depleted, potentially leading to applications in autonomously driven reaction or delivery systems and micro-/milli-robotics.

Light-induced charged slippery surfaces

Fang Wang et al.

Summary: Slippery lubricant-infused porous (SLIPS) and superhydrophobic surfaces have emerged as promising interfacial materials. We developed a class of slippery material that harnesses the dual advantages of both solid and lubricant by constructing a photothermal-responsive composite matrix with real-time light-induced surface charge regeneration capability. The resulting light-induced charged slippery surface (LICS) allows for photocontrol of droplets with fast speed, long distance, antigravity motion, and directionally collective motion. The LICS is further extended to biomedical domains for specific morphological hydrogel bead formation and biological diagnosis and analysis.
