Effect of surface modification on optical and electronic properties of graphene quantum dots

Priya Rani et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of boron doping and surface-modified configurations on the optical and electronic properties of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) were investigated using time-dependent density functional theory. It was found that both boron doping and surface modification led to a decrease in the band gap and a red shift in absorption and photoluminescence/fluorescence spectra of GQDs. The presence of boron atoms in the edge modified GQDs had a pronounced effect on the tuning of the energy bandgap. The fluorescence of surface-modified GQD fell in the near-infrared region with a quantum yield of 29%, making them suitable for bio-imaging applications.

Nonpolar Graphene Quantum Dot-Based Hydrophobic Coating from Microwave-Assisted Treatment of Styrofoam Waste

Dheeraj Kumar et al.

Summary: Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are a promising carbon nanomaterial with exceptional physiochemical properties. A microwave-assisted pyrolytic process is developed to synthesize GQDs with controlled size and without polar functionalities using Styrofoam waste as the precursor. The GQDs are highly soluble in nonpolar solvents and can be used as a coating on cotton fabric to provide durable hydrophobicity and excellent self-cleaning property. The use of nonbiodegradable polymer waste to generate GQDs not only addresses the issues of waste disposal, but also enables the production of high value-added products.
