Reduction-tolerant SnO2 assisted by surface hydroxyls for selective CO2 electroreduction to formate over wide potential range

Zhipeng Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a stable tin dioxide (SnO2-1) electrocatalyst with abundant surface hydroxyls was synthesized via a sodium cation assisted calcination method. The resulting electrocatalyst showed higher selectivity towards formate in a wide potential window compared to the one with fewer surface hydroxyl groups. Furthermore, the SnO2-1 catalyst demonstrated excellent performance with over 80% formate Faradaic efficiency at a high current density of 200 mA/cm^2 for at least 6 hours. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations also revealed that the presence of surface hydroxyls greatly influenced the overall performance of CO2-to-formate conversion by optimizing the formation energy of key intermediate *OCHO and helping to preserve partially reduced active surfaces in SnO2.

Upgrading CO2 into acetate on Bi2O3@carbon felt integrated electrode via coupling electrocatalysis with microbial synthesis

Xiaojing Liu et al.

Summary: Upgrading atmospheric CO2 into high-value-added acetate using renewable electricity is a challenge. We propose a system that combines inorganic electrocatalysis and microbial synthesis to produce acetate from CO2 through formate intermediates. A 3D Bi2O3@CF integrated electrode with a unique architecture was fabricated using a hydrothermal synthesis strategy, and it exhibited high Faradic efficiency for formate generation. By combining the electrode with CO2-fixing electroautotrophs, a substantial acetate yield rate was achieved in the electrochemical-microbial system equipped with Bi2O3@CF.

Acceleration of Electrochemical CO2 Reduction to Formate at the Sn/Reduced Graphene Oxide Interface

Takuya Tsujiguchi et al.

Summary: Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) plays a crucial role in enhancing the CO2 adsorption ability of Sn/rGO composites, leading to a 4-fold increase compared to bare Sn catalysts. The oxidized functional groups of rGO provide adsorption sites for CO2 towards the adjacent Sn surface, promoting the production of formate while suppressing the formation of CO* near the surface. Experimental results show that CO2 reduction is accelerated at the interface of Sn/rGO, improving the Faradaic efficiency by 1.8 times compared to bare Sn catalysts.
