Ternary AGa5S8 (A = K, Rb, Cs): Promising infrared nonlinear optical materials rationally realized by one-for-multiple substitution strategy

Wen-Fa Chen et al.

Summary: Commercially available infrared nonlinear optical materials, such as diamond-like AgGaQ(2) (Q = S, Se), have large NLO coefficients but low laser-induced damage thresholds (LIDTs), limiting their widespread laser applications. In this study, a one-for-multiple substitution strategy was applied to diamond-like zinc-blende ZnS, leading to the successful synthesis of three new polar ternary crystals AGa(5)S(8) (A = K, Rb, Cs). These crystals exhibit large second-harmonic generation responses and wide band gaps, meeting the requirements for outstanding IR NLO materials.

Cation Activation: An Effective Strategy for the Enhancement of Birefringence

Chenhui Hu et al.

Summary: For traditional birefringent materials, the roles of anion and cation groups are investigated. This work proposes a strategy to activate the functions of cation groups using hydroxyborate systems. Experimental verification with different cations shows an enlarged birefringence, breaking the dominant status of anions in the design of UV/deep ultraviolet materials with large birefringence.

Wen-Fa Chen et al.

Summary: Compared with the anionic group theory, it is found that in nonlinear optical materials, second-harmonic generation is mainly caused by anionic groups. Structural regulation of the cationic groups in salt-inclusion chalcogenides is performed to enhance their contribution to the NLO effects. The introduction of stereochemically active lone-electron-pair Pb2+ cation to NLO SICs results in highly oriented frameworks with the largest phase-matching SHG intensities among all SICs.

Summary: The design and exploration of outstanding infrared nonlinear optical (IR NLO) materials face the challenge of inherent incompatibility between a wide optical bandgap (E-g) and strong second-harmonic-generation (SHG) response (d(ij)). To solve this problem, researchers successfully designed and synthesized a new salt-inclusion thiosilicate, [Sr4Cl2][Si3S9], which exhibits the first discovered tri-polymerized [Si3S9] clusters. This material shows potential as a candidate for exploring ultrawide-bandgap IR SHG materials.

Material research from the viewpoint of functional motifs

Xiao-Ming Jiang et al.

Summary: The 'functional motif theory' has been proposed to assist in the design of functional materials and understand their properties. Functional motifs play a crucial role in generating material functions and cannot be replaced without losing relevant functions. The theory categorizes microscopic structures into six types and emphasizes the importance of machine learning in predicting material properties. The development of reliable databases for material structures and properties is essential for uncovering functional motifs.

Rational design via dual-site aliovalent substitution leads to an outstanding IR nonlinear optical material with well-balanced comprehensive properties

He-Di Yang et al.

Summary: In this work, a new quaternary non-centrosymmetric sulfide, SrCdSiS4, was designed using SrGa2S4 as the template. It displayed superior comprehensive performances in infrared nonlinear optical applications, breaking through the incompatibility between a large energy gap and a strong phase-matching response. Mechanism explorations revealed that the synergistic effect of distorted tetrahedral building units was responsible for the excellent properties. This work not only provides a high-performance candidate for infrared nonlinear optics, but also offers a feasible strategy for constructing non-centrosymmetric structures.

An Antimony(III) Fluoride Oxalate with Large Birefringence

Yangxin Chen et al.

Summary: In this work, the first antimony(III) fluoride oxalate birefringent material, KSb2C2O4F5, was designed and synthesized. Despite suboptimal arrangement of [C2O4](2-) groups in the crystal structure, KSb2C2O4F5 exhibited large birefringence, even outperforming the well-known commercial birefringent material alpha-BaB2O4. The prominent birefringence was attributed to the alliance of planar pi-conjugated [C2O4](2-) anions, highly distorted SbO2F2 and SbOF3 polyhedra with a stereochemically active lone pair, showing potential for high-performance birefringent materials development.
