Electrochromic and optical studies on Nb2O5-NiO mixed oxide films for smart window applications

S. Santhosh et al.

Summary: Nickel oxide (NiO), niobium oxide (Nb2O5), and their mixed oxide (Nb2O5-NiO) coatings were prepared on glass and conducting glass substrates by a simple spin coating technique. The mixed oxide films exhibited transparency, while Li+ intercalated Nb2O5-NiO coatings were black in color. The Nb2O5-NiO coatings showed superior electrochromic reversibility and fast switching compared to individual oxide coatings. The Li-Nb2O5-NiO coatings exhibited effective infrared (IR) absorption, absorbing around 65% of the incident IR radiation, and the remaining radiation was allowed to pass through the coating. Laser treatment of the Li-Nb2O5-NiO coatings improved their IR reflectance due to enhanced surface roughness, resulting in a better IR blocking window.

Sulfate-Decorated Amorphous-Crystalline Cobalt-Iron Oxide Nanosheets to Enhance O-O Coupling in the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Xiang Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents the synthesis of cobalt-iron oxide nanosheets with controlled amounts of SO42- anionic groups, which exhibit excellent performance in the electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The synthesis involves the use of a cobalt-based zeolitic imidazolate framework as a template and a source of iron and sulfate. Through a diffusion-controlled process, the structure of the framework is etched, forming porous assemblies of nanosheets. Iron ions partially replace cobalt, and sulfate ions are anchored on the material surface. The optimized material demonstrates outstanding OER activity, with a low overpotential and high stability.

Photochromic and Electrochromic Hydrogels based on Electron Donor and Acceptor Bridged Viologen Derivatives for Multifunctional Signage Applications

Dingli Liang et al.

Summary: Inserting a conjugated bridge between the two pyridinium units of the viologen is an effective approach to tuning the colorations of the viologen derivatives. The relationship between the charge density on the viologen bridge and the related photochromic and electrochromic properties has been rarely studied. Three conjugated bridges with different charge densities were incorporated between the two pyridinium units of ammonium-functionalized viologens, expanding the coloration scope and improving the chromic properties. An EC device based on AQV hydrogel exhibited high optical contrast, fast switching time, and no decay in optical contrast after 1000 cycles.
