Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy in the Characterisation and Application of Modified Electrodes for Electrochemical Sensors and Biosensors

Christopher M. A. Brett

Summary: Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is increasingly used in the characterization and quantitative determination of electrochemical sensors and biosensors. However, current research often fails to fully utilize the information obtained from full physical modeling and analysis of the impedance spectra, thus providing only superficial insights into the underlying processes. This article presents the fundamentals of electrochemical impedance for sensors and biosensors, with a focus on the necessary electrical circuit elements. Examples are provided to demonstrate the use of impedance spectroscopy in characterization and electroanalytical applications, emphasizing the importance of utilizing the complete information obtained from modeling and analysis. The future prospects of electrochemical impedance in the sensing field are also discussed.

Layered Semiconducting 2D Materials for Future Transistor Applications

Sheng-Kai Su et al.

Summary: As transistor size shrinks, the corresponding reduction in channel thickness is necessary to ensure sufficient gate control for turning off the transistor. Two-dimensional layered materials, with their atomically thin and smooth layers while maintaining high carrier mobility, present a unique opportunity for future transistors. To benefit from continuous scaling, the performance of scaled 2D transistors needs to surpass current Si technology.
